Quick Answer: Tatkal passport fees in India are ₹5,000 for a 36-page adult passport, which is the ₹2,500 normal fee plus a ₹2,500 Tatkaal fee. Adults submit three of 13 listed documents (minors two), and Passport Seva aims to dispatch within 3 working days. A major name change, a lost passport and some other cases can't use Tatkaal.
Tatkal is the urgent route for a fresh passport or re-issue. Passport Seva, under the Ministry of External Affairs, spells it "Tatkaal".
Overview: Tatkal Passport at a Glance
| Detail | Tatkal passport |
|---|---|
| Fee (36 pages, adult) | ₹5,000 (₹2,500 normal + ₹2,500 Tatkaal) |
| Documents | 3 of 13 listed (2 for minors), plus address, birth and non-ECR proof |
| Dispatch target | Up to 3 working days, counted from complete documents |
How much does a Tatkal passport cost in 2026?
A Tatkal passport costs ₹5,000 for 36 pages, ₹6,000 for 60 pages and ₹4,250 for a minor. Each figure is the normal fee plus the same ₹2,500 Tatkaal fee, under Schedule IV of the Passports Rules, 1980.
| Passport (fresh or re-issue) | Normal fee | Tatkaal fee | Total under Tatkal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult, 36 pages, 10 years | ₹2,500 | ₹2,500 | ₹5,000 |
| Adult, 60 pages, 10 years | ₹3,500 | ₹2,500 | ₹6,000 |
| Minor below 18, 36 pages, 5 years or until 18 | ₹1,750 | ₹2,500 | ₹4,250 |
The Tatkaal fee is an additional fee on top of the normal fee. A 15 to 17-year-old choosing a 10-year passport pays the adult rate.
First-time applicants aged 8 or under, or over 60, get 10% off the passport fee; confirm your category on the official Passport Seva fee structure.
Is the Tatkal fee charged on top of the normal fee?
Yes. The ₹2,500 Tatkaal fee is added to the normal fee, so a 36-page Tatkal passport costs ₹5,000, not ₹2,500. It's charged even if you book in the Normal appointment quota.
What changed on 1 July 2026?
Passport Tatkal fees rose under the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026 (G.S.R. 516(E)). A 36-page Tatkal passport went from ₹3,500 (₹1,500 plus ₹2,000) to ₹5,000, and the Tatkaal fee rose from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.
Who qualifies for a Tatkal passport?
Most citizens seeking a fresh passport or routine re-issue qualify if they have the documents, though the passport office has the final say. Passport Seva's Tatkaal passports page lists who can't apply:
| Case | Not eligible for Tatkaal |
|---|---|
| Fresh passport | Citizens by registration or naturalisation, adopted children, children born through surrogacy, minors with a single parent |
| Re-issue | Lost or stolen passport, short-validity passport, passport damaged beyond recognition, change of date or place of birth, a parent's or spouse's name, sex, appearance or signature |
| Any application | Any change in name, as this page lists it (the booklet differs, see note below), an address outside your Regional Passport Office's area, minors with Annexure C (such as separated parents) |
| Background | Deportees, people repatriated at government cost or who travelled on an Emergency Certificate, adverse police reports, criminal court cases, persons of Naga or Jammu and Kashmir origin, people on a watch list, habitual passport losers, or anyone who earlier travelled on a forged or fake passport |
Passport Seva's sources differ on name changes. This page excludes any name or spouse-name change. The current instruction booklet (V3.0), which the Tatkaal FAQ points to, lists Tatkaal documents for a minor spelling correction, a government employee's name change and changes after marriage, divorce or remarriage. Both exclude a major name change, so confirm your case at the Passport Seva Kendra before paying. The list is indicative; if you're on it, use the normal scheme.
Which documents do you need for a Tatkal passport?
For Tatkal passport documents, adults need any three of Passport Seva's 13 listed documents, and minors need any two from items 1 to 6. Add address, birth and non-ECR proof as applicable. Bring the originals and one set of self-attested photocopies.
- Aadhaar (PVC card, full letter or digitally signed e-Aadhaar)
- PAN card
- Student photo ID from a recognised institution
- Birth certificate
- Ration card (latest)
- Last passport (re-issue only)
- Voter ID
- Valid driving licence from the state where you apply
- Bank, Kisan or Post Office photo passbook, updated
- SC, ST or OBC certificate
- Arms licence
- Pension documents
- Service photo ID from government, a PSU, local body or public limited company
Your name, date of birth and father's name must match across them; cut-out Aadhaar cards aren't accepted. Sign the "Undertaking for Tatkaal Scheme" form and bring it to your appointment. For address and non-ECR proofs, see documents required for a passport.
How many days does a Tatkal passport take?
Tatkal passport time is up to 3 working days under Passport Seva's Citizen's Charter, counted from complete documents. The Tatkaal passport FAQs say a granted passport is dispatched on the third working day, not counting the day you submit.
| Route | Citizen's Charter timeline |
|---|---|
| Tatkal | Up to 3 working days |
| Normal re-issue, no prior police check | Up to 7 working days |
| Normal fresh passport | Up to 30 working days, plus police verification |
Compare how long a normal passport takes, and see how police verification works after issue.
Can you renew a passport under Tatkal?
Yes. A routine re-issue, such as an expiring passport or one with full pages, can go under Tatkaal for ₹5,000 (36 pages) or ₹6,000 (60 pages). Your original old passport is the core document; Passport Seva's Document Advisor gives the full list.
A damaged passport qualifies if the number and name are legible and the photo is intact. Lost passports, a major name change and date-of-birth changes need the normal route. You can also get help with your passport renewal application.
How do you apply under the Tatkal scheme?
You apply online on passportindia.gov.in, choose "Tatkaal", pay the full fee and book a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) slot. Tatkaal isn't offered at Post Office Passport Seva Kendras or passport camps.
Tatkaal slots open at a time set by each passport office, and you can reschedule only once. See how passport appointment booking works. For help filling the form and booking the slot, Jaagruk Bharat can assist with your Tatkal passport application. The fee is still paid on the official portal.
