How Long Does Police Verification Actually Take?
Wait about 14 days. According to the MEA, the average time for police verification in India is 14 days. In districts where police officers have access to the mPassport Police App on tablets, the verification time decreases to about 5 days. The app is operational in more than 25 states and union territories.

By default, Passport Seva sets every application to "Pre". First-time applicants can move to post-verification by presenting their Aadhaar card and a valid EPIC and PAN card supported by an Annexure-E affidavit. What Should You Keep Ready for the Officer's Visit?
You should still keep the original documents safe and stay reachable on the number mentioned. The authorities will not accept photocopies alone.
- Original Aadhaar, PAN and voter ID, plus one photocopy of each
- Proof of your current address in your own name (utility bill, rent agreement, bank statement)
- Your passport application reference or file number
- Two witnesses from your locality who can confirm you live there
In the case of a housing society or a rented apartment, officers commonly ask for certification of your address. Passport Seva has not published any set format for the society letter. Any signed document printed on letterhead which states your name, flat number and the duration of your stay is generally accepted. How Do You Check Your Police Verification Status?
Track it on Passport Seva rather than calling the police station. Go to the Passport Seva or mPassport Seva app and access the "track application status" by using your file reference number and date of birth. The two important stages are: "Police verification initiated," indicating that your application has arrived at the police station, and "Police verification report received," meaning that the police have submitted the verification report to the passport office.

What If the Report Is Adverse or Simply Never Arrives?
An unfavourable report does not mean that your request will be automatically denied. Instead, this application will be forwarded to the Passport Officer. Also, you will be given a chance to explain your situation.
