Completing a FASTag KYC update online through the issuer that provided your tag, a Jaagruk Bharat guide

Last updated: 26 August 2026

Quick Answer: A FASTag KYC update is done through the issuer that gave you the tag, using their app or website, not on one national portal. You submit identity and vehicle documents and verify by one-time password. KYC confirms who you are, which is a different exercise from the vehicle check known as KYV.

The misunderstanding about updating FASTag KYC comes from people expecting that there will be one particular government body responsible for this. In reality, there is none and FASTags are provided by different entities, each of which maintains its own customer database.

Overview: FASTag KYC at a Glance

Detail What applies
What KYC confirms Your identity as the customer
Where it is done With the issuer that provided your tag
Documents Identity proof, address proof, vehicle registration certificate
Cost No charge for completing KYC
Verification One-time password to your registered mobile number
Related but separate KYV, the Know Your Vehicle check

What Is FASTag KYC and Who Needs to Complete It?

FASTag KYC is the procedure of identifying and confirming that the person who claims to have the tag is indeed the holder of the tag. It is similar to the KYC process in other financial services and refers to the account from which the toll fee payments are made.

When Are You Asked to Complete It?

Most often you will get prompted to complete or amend your records when you get a new tag, find out some information about your records not being enough, or when the issuer of the tag has questions regarding your account and needs it verified. As the tag is linked to a prepaid account, the issuer has to protect your most recent customer information.

Is FASTag KYC the Same as KYV?

No, the difference matters even more than before. KYC stands for Know Your Customer. It refers to the process of identifying the customer. Unlike KYC, KYV means Know Your Vehicle. It indicates the verification of the tag assigned to the vehicle.

What Did NHAI Change in 2026?

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated in NHAI press release on discontinuing KYV that from February 1, 2026, the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process will be terminated for all Car, Jeep or Van vehicles in regards to issuance of FASTag. For car FASTags already issued, KYV is no longer a routine requirement either. It's now needed only in specific cases where a complaint arises, such as a loose tag, incorrect issuance or misuse. Where there's no complaint, no KYV is required.

What Replaced KYV?

Instead, there is a strict checking of verification before the tag is implemented. This means the announcement does not abolish customer KYC.

How Do You Complete Your FASTag KYC Online?

Go to the application or website of your provider to find the tag you acquired and upload the requisite documents through customer-profile or KYC section.

  1. Identify your issuer. It's named on the tag itself, on your welcome message, or in the account you recharge through.
  2. Open that issuer's app or website and log in with the mobile number registered against the tag.
  3. Find the profile, account or KYC section.
  4. Enter your details exactly as they appear on your documents, and upload identity proof, address proof and your vehicle registration certificate.
  5. Verify with the one-time password sent to your registered mobile number.
  6. Save the acknowledgement or reference number the issuer gives you.

What If Your Registered Number Has Changed?

If you have lost the mobile phone number that you registered, you must resolve that problem before moving on with the other steps because the one-time passcode will be needed at every stage.

Which Documents Do You Need?

The list is short and largely the same across issuers.

Document Purpose
Identity proof Confirms who you are
Address proof Confirms where you live
Vehicle registration certificate Links the tag to the correct vehicle
Passport-size photograph Requested by some issuers
Registered mobile number Receives the verification one-time password

What Gets Submissions Rejected?

First, double-check that the spelling of your name coincides precisely in your identification papers and your registration certificate. Any mismatch in the name spelling may lead to the rejection of your application. Second, ensure to use the vehicle registration certificate belonging to the car you put the tag on and not to another vehicle owned by you.

How Do You Check Whether Your KYC Is Complete?

Check the profile or account status inside your issuer's app or website, where the KYC state is normally shown against your account. There's no single national lookup for this, because the record sits with the issuer rather than in a public register.

What If the Status Is Unclear?

If the status is unclear, contact the issuer's customer support with your tag details and registered mobile number.

What Changed for New FASTags in 2026?

According to new rule passed by NHAI, verification of the vehicle details must be done in the VAHAN database by the issuer before activating the FASTag instead of the previous process of verifying the vehicle details after FASTag activation.

What If VAHAN Has No Record of Your Vehicle?

Where a vehicle's details are not available on VAHAN, the issuer must validate using the registration certificate before activation, with full accountability. Tags sold through online channels are covered by the same rule and are activated only after complete validation. Parivahan portal can be used to check the data associated with a particular vehicle in VAHAN.

What Does That Mean in Practice?

The practical implications of this mean that if your FASTag has been issued for your brand new car, you do not need to search for any kind of documents related to your vehicle. If there arises a situation when you must search for vehicle documents, it is a cause for concern.

What Happens If Your Details Are Not in Order?

An account with incomplete records can be restricted by the issuer, which in practice means recharges and toll deductions stop behaving normally. That's a separate problem from a tag being blocked for low balance or being blacklisted, and the fixes differ.

Is This the Same as a Blacklisted Tag?

If your tag has actually been blacklisted, our guide to removing a blacklisted FASTag covers that specific situation. For general programme information, the National Highways Authority of India is the authority behind the FASTag system.

Where to Get Help

This task belongs to your issuer who is responsible for keeping your record and is the only entity that can amend it.

Where Does Jaagruk Bharat Fit In?

Where people get stuck is working out which issuer holds their tag, or getting a registered mobile number corrected before anything else can proceed. If you'd rather have that sorted out for you, Jaagruk Bharat can help with FASTag verification and account updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a fee for completing FASTag KYC?
No. Completing or updating your KYC carries no charge from the issuer. If somebody asks you to pay to get your KYC done, treat it as a warning sign and deal only with the issuer that gave you the tag.
Is KYV still required for my car FASTag?
Not as a routine requirement. NHAI discontinued Know Your Vehicle for new car FASTags from 1 February 2026, and for existing car tags it applies only where a complaint arises, such as a loose tag, incorrect issuance or misuse.
Can I complete FASTag KYC on a government website?
The given answer is no. As tags are assigned by authorized entities having a customer database, the KYC is done either on the application or the website of the entity that issued the tag. There is no national portal available for KYC.
What if my registered mobile number has changed?
Make it a point that you updated your contact number before proceeding with KYC, since your verification is dependent on a verification code sent to this contact number. No other steps in the process of verification would be possible unless the mentioned phone number is fully operational.
How long does a FASTag KYC update take?
Different issuers apply different practices in regard to processing all proposals, and some of them take days to send out responses while others do that much faster. Problems usually arise in connection with either differences in names or problematic upload process.
