Quick Answer: Driving licence validity in India follows your age under Section 14 of the Motor Vehicles Act, and the Parivahan Sarathi portal shows your expiry date. A private licence runs until 40 if issued under 30 and 10 years from 30 to 49. From 50 to 54 it runs until 60, from 55 it's 5 years, and transport licences last 5.
Your age on the day the licence is issued or renewed decides which band applies. So the same person moves through the bands over a lifetime, and each renewal gets a fresh expiry date.

How long is a driving licence valid in India?
A private driving licence is valid until 40 if you get it before 30, and for 10 years if you get it between 30 and 49. Parivahan's own answer to what the validity of a driving licence is sets out the same age bands.
| Your age on the date of issue or renewal | DL validity |
|---|---|
| Under 30 | Until you turn 40 |
| 30 to 49 | 10 years from issue or renewal |
| 50 to 54 | Until you turn 60 |
| 55 and above | 5 years from issue or renewal |
| Transport licence (any age) | 5 years |
| Hazardous goods (transport) | 3 years |
Here's how it plays out. If you got your first licence at 22, it's valid until your 40th birthday, so that's an 18-year driving licence validity period. Renew at 40 and you get 10 more years, to 50.
Why do some sites still say "20 years or until 50"?
That was the old rule, and it changed in 2019. Before the amendment, a private licence ran for 20 years or until the holder turned 50, whichever came first, and then 5 years at a time.
The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 replaced that clause with the four age bands in the table above. It also raised the transport licence period to 5 years and set 3 years for hazardous goods.
Some older pages, and a few government FAQ lines written before the change, still quote "20 years" or "until 50". When two figures clash, go by the Act and by the expiry date printed on your own licence.
How do you check your driving licence validity online?
You can do a driving licence validity check on the Parivahan Sarathi portal, which shows the expiry date against your licence number. It takes a couple of minutes.
- Open the Parivahan Sarathi portal for licence services.
- Select the state that issued your licence.
- Open the Others menu and choose DL Search (the label can differ slightly by state).
- Verify your mobile number with an OTP, then enter your licence details as the page asks.
- Read the validity dates shown for NT and, if you have one, TR.
You can also see your licence, with its validity dates, in the mParivahan app or DigiLocker. Our guide to downloading your e-driving licence walks through both.
What do NT and TR mean on your licence?
NT means non-transport and TR means transport, and each has its own DL validity date on the card. NT covers private vehicles like your own car or scooter. TR covers commercial vehicles such as taxis, trucks and buses.
If you only drive your own vehicle, you'll just see an NT date. A commercial driver may see both, with the TR date usually much sooner. Always check the date that matches the vehicle you drive.
When does your licence need renewing, and can you renew early?
Your licence needs renewing by the expiry date shown for NT or TR, and yes, you can renew early. Under Section 15 of the Motor Vehicles Act as amended in 2019, you can apply online on Parivahan Sarathi up to one year before expiry or within one year after it.
Our step-by-step guide to renewing your driving licence online covers the forms, documents and fees.
Timing matters most after expiry. If you apply more than one year after the licence expired, the RTO must refuse renewal unless you pass the driving test again. In Maharashtra and other states, renewal still runs through the same Sarathi portal.
What happens if you drive on an expired licence?
If your driving licence expired and you keep driving, that counts as driving without a valid licence. The 2019 amendment set the fine for this under Section 181 at ₹5,000.
Don't count on any buffer after the printed date. Treat the expiry date as the last day you can legally drive, and start the renewal well before it.
