How do you renew a driving licence in Delhi online in 2026?

Driving licence renewal online in Delhi runs on Sarathi, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) licence portal, with Delhi chosen as your state. Delhi's service menu lists "Apply for DL Renewal", so you start online.

  1. Open the Sarathi state selection page and choose Delhi.
  2. Under Driving Licence, open "Services on DL (Renewal/Duplicate/AEDL/IDP/Others)", or use the "Renewal of DL" link in Delhi's Contactless Licence Services pop-up, and enter your licence number and date of birth.
  3. Choose renewal and complete Aadhaar authentication. It works only if your Aadhaar name, date of birth and father's or spouse's name match your licence record.
  4. Complete the Form 1 self-declaration in the form, upload Form 1A if you're 40 or older, add your photo and signature, then pay the fee online.
  5. Save the application number. Book a slot only if Sarathi asks you to.

Parivahan's FAQ confirms you can renew within one year before or after expiry. For the national walkthrough, see our guide to renewing a driving licence online anywhere in India.

What is the DL renewal fee in Delhi, and what is the late fee?

The DL renewal fee in Delhi is ₹400 within the grace period and ₹1,500 after it. Both figures are on the Delhi Transport Department's renewal page, set under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR).

When you apply Renewal fee Smart card Delhi total
Within the grace period ₹200 ₹200 ₹400
After the grace period ₹300 + ₹1,000 per year (or part) of delay after the grace period ₹200 ₹1,500 for up to one year after the grace period ends

How long is the grace period in Delhi?

Neither Delhi nor Parivahan gives it in days. Section 15 of the Motor Vehicles Act allows the ordinary fee up to one year after expiry. Sarathi works out your exact amount, so check the fee screen before you pay. Renewing before expiry is the only sure way to pay ₹400.

Which form do you need: Form 1, Form 1A or Form 9?

Everyone files Form 2 online, which includes the Form 1 self-declaration of fitness, adding a Form 1A medical certificate at 40 or older. Form 9, the old paper renewal form, is still on Delhi's download page, but Parivahan's current Form 2 covers renewal.

Your situation What to submit
Private licence, under 40 Form 1 self-declaration
Private licence, 40 or older Form 1 self-declaration plus Form 1A signed by a registered medical practitioner
Commercial (transport) licence Form 1A at any age, plus a refresher training certificate (heavy vehicles) or a short refresher course (other commercial vehicles)
Address has changed Tick change of address as well, with proof of your new address
Expired more than one year Everything above, plus a driving test

Changing your address too? Our driving licence address change guide lists the proof you need.

Why is the Form 1A age 40 and not 50?

Delhi's older FAQ page says 50, but the Motor Vehicles Act requires Form 1A once "the applicant has attained the age of forty years", and Parivahan's FAQ agrees.

Is Delhi DL renewal faceless, or do you visit the zonal office?

Mostly faceless, apart from collecting the licence. MoRTH notification S.O. 4353(E) of 16 September 2022 lets you renew online with Aadhaar authentication when no driving test is needed. Delhi's older renewal page still says to approach a zonal office, but Sarathi now lists renewal as a faceless service.

When will you still need to visit?

You'll go in person, usually to your zonal office, if:

What if your Delhi licence expired more than a year ago?

You can still renew it, but only after passing a driving test. Under Section 15 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the authority must refuse renewal after one year unless you pass. Apply on Sarathi, pay the late fee and book the test at your zonal office.

How do you track a Delhi renewal application?

Track it on Sarathi: choose Delhi, open "Application Status", and enter your application number and date of birth. Once it's approved, you can download your renewed licence as an e-DL. If the card doesn't arrive, Parivahan advises asking your zonal office for the dispatch tracking number.

Can someone help you file a Delhi DL renewal?

Yes. The official route is always Sarathi, and every fee goes to the Transport Department. If forms, uploads or Aadhaar authentication hold you up, Jaagruk Bharat can help you prepare and file your driving licence application on that portal. It's a private helpdesk and doesn't issue or approve licences. For related RTO paperwork, browse our documents and licensing guides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does renewing early shorten my licence's validity?
It can. The Motor Vehicles Act says an early renewal takes effect from the date of renewal, not your old expiry date, so unused months are lost. Applying a few weeks before expiry keeps you legal without giving up much of your current licence's remaining validity.
How long is a renewed driving licence valid?
It depends on your age at renewal. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, a private licence renewed between 30 and 50 is valid for 10 years. Between 50 and 55 it runs until you turn 60, and from 55 it lasts five years. Transport licences last five years, or three for hazardous goods vehicles.
Can I drive while my renewal is pending after expiry?
Don't. The Motor Vehicles Act used to keep an expired licence effective for 30 days, but the 2019 amendment removed that cover. An expired licence doesn't authorise you to drive, even if your renewal is already submitted. Renew before the expiry date so there's no gap.
Can I renew my Delhi licence if I now live in another state?
Yes. Apply on Sarathi under the state where you now live, and that state's licensing authority processes the renewal. The Motor Vehicles Act requires it to inform the original issuing authority in Delhi. Carry proof of your current address in case the new office asks for it.
Do I need to link Aadhaar before renewing online?
It helps, but it isn't compulsory. Aadhaar authentication is voluntary under MoRTH's notification and is what makes renewal contactless. Without it, you can still renew by proving your identity with another accepted document at the zonal office. Delhi's Sarathi menu has an Appointments option for booking that visit.
