Quick Answer: No, linking your Voter ID with Aadhaar isn't mandatory, because the Election Commission of India (ECI) treats giving Aadhaar as purely voluntary. Existing voters who want to link use Form 6B, which also lets you submit another listed document instead of Aadhaar. Your name can't be removed from the electoral roll just because you didn't link.
So if you're asking "is voter ID Aadhaar link mandatory?", the answer is no. You stay on the roll and can vote without it.

Is it mandatory to link your Voter ID with Aadhaar?
No. The ECI's own FAQ on electoral rolls says the Aadhaar field is purely voluntary, and not giving it can't be a ground to reject your application.
The legal basis came from the Election Laws (Amendment) Act, 2021, which let Electoral Registration Officers ask for Aadhaar to confirm identity. Form 6B followed in 2022. When it launched, the ECI's 2022 announcement on PIB said furnishing Aadhaar "is purely voluntary".
The same answer covers "is it mandatory to link Aadhaar card with voter card". In March 2025, the ECI said any linking of the voter ID (EPIC) with Aadhaar would be done only as per Article 326 of the Constitution, the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the Supreme Court's judgment in WP (Civil) No. 177/2023.
What is Form 6B, and who is it for?
Form 6B is the ECI form existing voters use to give their Aadhaar number for authenticating their entry in the electoral roll. It's filed under Rule 26-B of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960.
If you've searched "form 6B kya hai", that's the short version: a one-page letter, not a new application. You fill in your name, constituency and EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card) number, then give your Aadhaar number or an alternative document.
It's only for people already on the roll. If you aren't registered yet, you need Form 6 instead, and you can apply for a new voter ID card with help if you prefer.
What can you submit instead of Aadhaar on Form 6B?
If you don't have an Aadhaar number, tick option (ii) on Form 6B and attach a copy of any one of these 11 documents. The list is taken from the official Form 6B PDF:
| # | Alternative document on Form 6B |
|---|---|
| 1 | MGNREGA Job Card |
| 2 | Passbook with photograph issued by a bank or post office |
| 3 | Health Insurance Smart Card issued under the Ministry of Labour's scheme |
| 4 | Driving Licence |
| 5 | PAN Card |
| 6 | Smart Card issued by the RGI under the NPR |
| 7 | Indian Passport |
| 8 | Pension document with photograph |
| 9 | Service Identity Card with photograph (Central/State Government, PSUs, public limited companies) |
| 10 | Official Identity Card issued to MPs, MLAs or MLCs |
| 11 | Unique Disability ID (UDID) Card, issued by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment |
Tick only one document box.
Can your name be removed from the voter list for not linking?
No. The ECI's 2022 instructions say no entry in the electoral roll shall be deleted because a person can't furnish or intimate an Aadhaar number.
Names come off the roll for other reasons, such as death, shifting or duplicate entries, after verification. The Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi's FAQ says the same: your name won't be struck off for not linking.
If you choose to link, how do you do it online?
To link voter ID with Aadhaar card online, submit Form 6B on voters.eci.gov.in or the Voter Helpline app with your EPIC and Aadhaar number. You log in with your mobile number, and the Aadhaar OTP goes to the number registered with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
Filing Form 6B online like this is what people mean by "form 6B Aadhaar link online". The steps:

- Open Form 6B and choose your state and constituency.

Do you need Aadhaar for the SIR form?
No. Giving your Aadhaar number in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) enumeration form is optional, according to the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi's SIR 2026 FAQ. One catch: the online enumeration form on the Voters' Service Portal ends with an e-Sign step, and it's open only to electors whose name in the electoral roll matches the name in their Aadhaar. If it doesn't, or you'd rather not use Aadhaar, hand the form to your BLO while enumeration is open in your state.
Aadhaar can help as an identity document, though. On 8 September 2025, the Supreme Court directed the ECI to accept the Aadhaar card as a 12th document in Bihar's SIR, adding that it's proof of identity, not citizenship. For what SIR involves in your state, read our guide to the Special Intensive Revision.
