Signs can have various shapes, which will inform its meaning and message: the triangular sign will imply warning, the circular will indicate orders and rectangular sign will be informative. A simple prep plan that works:
- Read the traffic-sign chart in your state RTO booklet or the official material, and group signs by shape and colour.
- Memorise the key numbers - 30 mg/100 ml alcohol limit, seat-belt and helmet rules, and your local speed limits.
- Take mock tests daily for two or three days; the state transport site and RTO apps offer them in your regional language.
- Focus on your weak spots - most people slip on cautionary signs and right-of-way rules.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are there in the learner's licence test?
Most states set between 10 and 20 questions in the learner's licence test. The exact number depends on your state transport department, but the questions always cover road signs, traffic rules and road safety. Check your state's rule when you book the slot.
What is the passing mark for the LL test?
You generally need about 60% of the answers correct to pass - for example, 6 of 10 or 12 of 20 questions. The exact threshold is set by each state. Your result appears on screen immediately, and in most states the learner's licence is generated the same day.
Can I retake the test if I fail?
Yes. If you do not clear it, you can retake the learner's licence test, usually after a short waiting period and a small re-test fee. There is no limit on serious attempts, so review the signs you missed and try again with confidence.
How long is a learner's licence valid?
A learner's licence is valid for 6 months from the date of issue, a window fixed nationally rather than set by individual states. Within this period you must practise and appear for the permanent driving licence test, otherwise you will need to apply for a fresh learner's licence.
What documents do I need to appear for the test?
Carry the identity and address proof you submitted with your application, plus your appointment confirmation. If you take the test online from home, keep your Aadhaar-linked mobile handy for verification, since the faceless test cannot proceed without a working OTP. Requirements vary slightly by state.
Is the learner's licence test the same in every state?
The topics are the same across India, but the question count, pass mark and language options are set by each state transport department. The road signs and traffic rules follow one national standard, so preparing from any standard sign chart works everywhere.
