Permanent Driving Licence Apply Online: Fees and Documents

A Permanent Driving License is an official document that is issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to authorise a person to legally drive on the roads of India. As its name suggests, it is different from other licenses; unlike the Learner’s license, which is temporary, a Permanent DL is for a comparatively longer time and is issued only after a person passes a comprehensive test.

Please note that the word ‘permanent’ does not imply that it is valid for a lifetime. It simply means that it is valid for a comparatively longer time, like 20 years or till the licenseholder attains the age of 40 years, after which one needs to renew their Permanent Driving License in India.

Let's look at some of the benefits of the Permanent DL that people can enjoy after applying for one. Let us look at some of the major benefits that come along with this type of driving license:

• A Permanent Driving License in India authorises an individual to legally drive on the roads of India and helps them comply with the traffic laws and regulations.

• One of the highlighted features and benefits of a Permanent DL is that, unlike other licenses, it does not need to be renewed every year.

• The driving license is multipurpose as it can be used as proof of identity and proof of address across various settings in India.

It is mandatory to apply for and possess a valid Permanent DL. However, those who do not will have to face several consequences and issues, some of which are described below:

• All those individuals who are found driving on the roads of India without a valid Permanent DL will be punished under the Motor Vehicles Act.

• Driving with valid official cards and documents is safer for both the driver and other people on the road, as a license is only issued after a person proves their ability as a driver.

Individuals first need to fulfil the eligibility criteria for the Permanent DL. The Permanent driving license eligibility criteria are as follows:

• The applicant must be above the age of 18 years for the legal operation of two-wheeler vehicles and at least 20 years old for driving four-wheeler vehicles.

• It is also mandatory that the applicant has a valid Learner’s License for a minimum of 30 days (one month) but not more than 180 days (nine months).

• The applicant is required to pass the driving test conducted by the Regional Transport Office (RTO).
