What Is Aadhaar Deactivation? (Definition, Types, When It Applies)

Aadhaar deactivation is the process by which the Aadhaar card of an individual is either permanently or temporarily disabled by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). A deactivated Aadhaar simply means that the Aadhaar card cannot be used for identity verification to access any service in any sector, such as banks. Note that a deactivated Aahdaar does not mean it ceases to exist; it still exists in the database, but only under the non-functional section.

There are mainly two types of Aadhaar deactivation: temporary deactivation, wherein an Aadhaar is disabled but only for a limited amount of time, and permanent deactivation.

There are numerous reasons behind getting an Aadhaar card deactivated, some of the common reasons are:

  • Not updating children’s biometrics after they attain a certain age (in this case, Aadhaar is temporarily disabled).

  • Aadhaar is suspected to be fake or a duplicate, leading to permanent deactivation.

  • Mismatch or inconsistency in the information stored in the Aadhaar database and information saved in other related databases.

  • Suspicious activity suspected by the legal authorities.

Deactivation After Death Vs. Deactivation Due To Inactivity

Aadhaar deactivation due to death means deactivating the Aadhaar of people who have passed away by the Unique Identification Authority of India. This is primarily done by the family members of the deceased to ensure that no one else with ill intentions can misuse the deceased’s Aadhaar for personal gain. Notifying the UIDAI is a compulsory requirement that every citizen is required to do after any one of their family members passes away, so that the national database can be as accurate as possible.

On the other hand, deactivation due to inactivity happens when an Aadhaar card is being used by people in non-compliance with the rules and instructions of the Unique Identification Authority of India, such as not updating children’s biometrics, incomplete or inconsistent information, etc. This type of deactivation is temporary in nature; therefore, people can do the Aadhaar reactivation process after resolving whatever error needs to be resolved first.

Can I Voluntarily Deactivate My Own Aadhaar?

As of now, the Unique Identification Authority of India does not provide Indian citizens with the option of deactivating their own Aadhaar cards because of their own personal choices. In India, Aadhaar is one of the most used and nationally accepted proof of IDs, which remains active and valid throughout one’s lifetime.

People cannot voluntarily deactivate their Aadhaar cards; however, this does not mean that they do not have any control over their Aadhaar cards. People have been given various options, like locking their biometrics, limiting authentication, etc., which not only gives them a sense of control over such an essential proof of ID but also safeguards them against various kinds of criminal activities, like identity theft.
