Quick Answer: You can change your Aadhaar address online on the myAadhaar portal for ₹50 including GST, with no visit to a centre. You log in with your Aadhaar number and an OTP, enter the new address, and upload one valid proof of address in your own name.
An Aadhaar address update online is the one demographic change you can finish without visiting a centre. The obstacle is almost never the form. It is the document: a proof of address that is not on the accepted list, or not in your name, is the most common reason a request comes back rejected.

Latest Update
As of September 2026, UIDAI's List of Acceptable Documents for Aadhaar enrolment and update was last reissued in June 2026, so a checklist saved earlier may already be out of date. Aadhaar update charges were last revised with effect from 1 November 2025. Confirm both on uidai.gov.in before you travel to a centre anywhere in India.
What Documents Count as Proof of Address for Aadhaar?
One valid proof of address in your own name is enough. UIDAI's list splits into documents that prove both identity and address, and documents that prove address only.
Accepted as both identity and address proof:
- Ration card
- Voter identity card
- Domicile certificate or resident certificate
- PAN card or e-PAN
- Driving licence
- CGHS card
- Marksheet or certificate from a recognised board or university, with your photograph
Accepted as address proof only:
- Electricity, water, gas, telephone, mobile or broadband bill, not more than three months old
- Property tax receipt, not more than one year old
- Rent or lease certificate in the UIDAI standard format, from a designated officer
The full list sits on the UIDAI online services page. Check it before you pay: the list is what a rejection is measured against.
How Do You Update Your Aadhaar Address Online?
You do it on the myAadhaar portal in a few minutes.
- Log in to the myAadhaar portal with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
- Choose the address update service.
- Enter the new address exactly as it appears on your proof of address.
- Upload a legible scan or photograph of that document; a blurred upload counts as invalid.
- Pay the ₹50 fee online by card, net banking, UPI or wallet.
- Note the Update Request Number (URN) the portal returns. That is what you track the request with.
If your mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar, the online route is closed to you, because there is no way to receive the OTP. That change has to be made in person at an enrolment centre first.
What Does an Aadhaar Address Update Cost?
₹50 including GST for an online address update. Other Aadhaar services are priced differently, which is where the confusion comes from. A document update is a separate transaction, and the Citizen Charter is the figure to trust for it:
| Service | Charge |
|---|---|
| Address update online, via myAadhaar | ₹50 |
| Document update at an Aadhaar centre | ₹50 |
| Document update through myAadhaar | ₹25 |
| Biometric or photograph update at a centre | ₹100 |
| Coloured print of Aadhaar at an enrolment centre | ₹30 |
Charges are revised periodically, so confirm before you pay. Our note on the Aadhaar update fee changes covers the latest revision.
How Do You Check Your Aadhaar Address Update Status?
Use the Update Request Number on the myAadhaar portal. The URN is issued the moment you submit and is the only way to follow the request, so save it before closing the page. Our guide to checking an Aadhaar update status by SRN explains each stage.
Keep the old address document until the new Aadhaar is generated: until approval, e-KYC still reads the old address.
What If the Proof of Address Is Not in Your Name?
This is the case that defeats most applicants. UIDAI requires the document to be in the name of the Aadhaar holder, so a bill in a landlord's or parent's name will not do.
Two ways round it. Get a rent or lease certificate in the UIDAI standard format from a designated officer, written for exactly this situation. Or use the head-of-family route at an Aadhaar enrolment centre, where a relative with a valid document and proof of relationship supports your update.
UIDAI suggests refreshing identity and address documents every ten years from the date your Aadhaar was generated - a good moment to fix a mismatch rather than wait for a rejection. Our guide to how often you can update Aadhaar details covers each field.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Typing an address that does not match the document. It must match the proof you upload line for line; a tidied-up version is a rejection.
- Using a bill that is too old. Utility bills must be no more than three months old; a property tax receipt no more than a year.
- Uploading a document in someone else's name. Use the standard certificate format or the head-of-family route instead.
- Assuming an address change needs biometrics. It does not. A centre visit is only for biometric or photograph updates, such as the child biometric update at seven, or an unregistered mobile.
- Closing the page without the URN. You cannot check the status without it, and it cannot be retrieved later.
If you would rather not handle the upload and the follow-up, Jaagruk Bharat can prepare and file the address update for you; the update is approved by UIDAI, not by us. More identity-document guides sit in our documents and licensing category.
