What is an EPIC number, and where is it on your voter ID?
An EPIC number is the unique code on your Electors Photo Identity Card, the card most people call a voter ID. It's printed on the card itself, on the downloadable e-EPIC and against your name in the electoral roll.
The ECI's Manual on Electoral Rolls says every epic number has three letters followed by seven digits. The letters are a code for your assembly constituency, and the digits are a six-digit serial number plus one check digit.
If you've lost the paper card, the digital copy is listed as a citizen service on the National Portal of India's e-EPIC page.
How do you find your EPIC number by name on the Electoral Search portal?
Epic number search by name is free on the ECI's official Electoral Search portal. You enter your personal details, and it returns your entry in the electoral roll with the EPIC number on it.
Follow these steps:
- Open the portal and tap Search by Details.
- Select your state and, if you like, a language.
- Enter your name and a relative's name, usually a parent or spouse, as it appears on the roll.
- Add your date of birth or your age, and your gender.
- Optionally, pick your district and assembly constituency to narrow the results.
- Type the captcha and tap Search.
- Open your entry and note the EPIC number shown with your polling station details.
If several people match, compare the relative's name and age before you pick yours. To find EPIC number by name quickly, spell the name exactly as it was on your enrolment form.
Can you find your EPIC number with your mobile number?
Yes, you can search your EPIC number by mobile number, but only if that number is already linked to your EPIC. The electoral search portal's Search by Mobile tab sends an OTP to that number and then shows your roll entry.
- Tap Search by Mobile and select your state.
- Enter your mobile number and the captcha, then tap Send OTP.
- Enter the OTP and tap Search.
If your number isn't linked, add it through Form 8 on the Voters' Service Portal first.
How do you find it without your voter ID card?
Without the card, the name search above is still how to find EPIC number details fastest, since it needs only your name, a relative's name, age and state. There are three more places to look:
- Your e-EPIC: if you downloaded your e-EPIC earlier, the number is on the PDF.
- The electoral roll PDF: the Voters' Service Portal links to your state Chief Electoral Officer's website, where your EPIC number is printed against your name in the roll.
- Your Booth Level Officer (BLO) or 1950: call the ECI's toll-free helpline on 1950, or use Book a Call with BLO on the Voters' Service Portal.
An old or damaged card still shows your current number, so check it first.
Can you find your EPIC number from your Aadhaar?
No. There's no official way to look up an EPIC number with your Aadhaar number. The electoral search portal only searches by EPIC, by personal details or by mobile, and your Aadhaar card doesn't carry your voter number.
Linking works the other way round. To link your voter ID with Aadhaar online, you use Form 6B, which asks for your existing EPIC number, so find the EPIC first using the steps above.
Where do you need your EPIC number for the SIR form?
You need it to fill the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) enumeration form online. On the Voters' Service Portal, you select your state and enter your EPIC number, and the portal pulls up a pre-filled form. You then verify it with an OTP sent to the mobile linked to that EPIC.
