Quick Answer: No documents are required for Udyam registration. The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises runs it as a paperless, self-declared process, so nothing is scanned or uploaded. You only type in an Aadhaar number, verify it by OTP, and provide PAN, plus GSTIN if GST applies to your business.
Most internet lists about the "documents needed for Udyam registration" are wrong. They tell you to carry numerous documents such as your bank passbook or electricity bill and the partnership deed. The official portal asks for none of it.

What Documents Are Required for Udyam MSME Registration?
None. In the official Udyam portal it is noted that the Ministry of MSME has stated that registration is "fully online, paperless and based on self-declaration". This means that no documents will have to be submitted and what is required is to provide just three identifiers which the system will verify electronically. These identifiers are the Aadhaar number, PAN (Permanent Account Number), and GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) where applicable.
| What you provide | Mandatory? | Upload needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar number, linked to a mobile for the one-time password (OTP) | Yes | No - typed in, verified by OTP |
| PAN (of the enterprise or proprietor) | Yes, since 1 April 2021 | No - verified against Income Tax records |
| GSTIN | Only where the CGST Act 2017 requires GST registration | No - verified against GST records |
| Bank account number and IFSC | Entered in the form | No - typed in, no passbook |
| NIC code for your business activity | Yes | No - picked from a dropdown |
| Address proof, rent agreement, electricity bill | No | Never asked |
| Partnership deed, MoA, sale deed, photograph | No | Never asked |
The same applies to investment and turnover as well. The figures stated are derived from the connections made with Income Tax and GSTIN; therefore, no evidence is provided. Jaagruk Bharat provides help through assisted Udyam MSME certificate support.
What Mistakes Do People Make About Udyam Documents?
An error that is frequently made is to continue using your previous checklist. Udyam replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) and EM-II systems, which did involve paperwork, and that content was never rewritten.
- Paying for a free service. Look-alike portals charge ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 for a registration the government provides at no cost.
- Collecting scans in advance. A rent agreement or partnership deed wastes an afternoon, because there is nowhere on the form to upload it.
- Using the wrong person's Aadhaar. A partnership firm must use the managing partner's Aadhaar, not any partner's.
- Assuming GST is compulsory. A trader below the GST threshold registers perfectly well without a GSTIN.
Whose Aadhaar Number Does Udyam Registration Use?
It depends on how your business is constituted, and the registration form is specific about it.
| Type of enterprise | Aadhaar to use |
|---|---|
| Proprietorship firm | The proprietor |
| Partnership firm | The managing partner |
| Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) | The karta |
| Company, LLP, Cooperative Society, Society or Trust | The authorised signatory, along with the organisation's own PAN and GSTIN |
Organisations are permitted to possess only one Udyam registration; however multiple manufacturing and service operations can be carried out under this single registration. The one Aadhaar, one Udyam rule encompasses various business operations falling under it.
Are PAN and GSTIN Mandatory for Udyam Registration?
PAN is mandatory; GSTIN is conditional. Since 1 April 2021, PAN has been mandatory for Udyam registration and therefore, no Udyam registration can be obtained without it.
According to the announcement made by the Ministry of MSME, it is clearly stated that the GSTIN is required only in case where the CGST Act 2017 is directly applicable on that particular person. Hence, a trader whose turnover is below the GST threshold does not need one.
What Do You Actually Type Into the Udyam Form?
Six short screens, in this order, on the new Udyam registration form:
- Aadhaar verification - Aadhaar number, entrepreneur's name, consent declaration, then the OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile.
- PAN verification - type of organisation and the PAN, which the portal checks online.
- Basic details - enterprise name, social category, gender and whether the entrepreneur is specially abled.
- Official address - plant or office address, district, pin code, email and mobile.
- Plant or unit details - additional units, bank account number and IFSC.
- Other details - number of employees, business activity, and your NIC code.
You must submit your application before the online release of the certificate. You can then download your Udyam certificate or verify a Udyam registration certificate if a bank asks for proof.
What If Your Business Has No PAN or GST Number?
Use the Udyam Assist Platform instead. The platform was launched on 11 January 2023 and it is still in force today. It is this route for informal micro enterprises that applies to businesses which are not within the purview of PAN and GST. Small Industries Development Bank of India is the implementing agency.
The registration procedure is carried out through authorised partners, usually a bank, rather than by self-filing. Its certificate ranks on par with a Udyam Registration Certificate for Priority Sector Lending.
You can update or edit your Udyam registration later on the same portal. More guides sit in the documents and licensing hub.
