These artists create a wide range of beautiful and aesthetic products that take hours and sometimes days to create, but they never get the monetary reward that is on par with their work, making their lives extremely difficult. To address this issue and to improve their standard of living, the state government of Karnataka introduced a scheme called the Swavalambi/Sanchari Marata Malige Yojana. The sarkari scheme is implemented by the Karnataka Leather Industries Development Corporation Limited, Department of Social Welfare.

The scheme is especially created for the benefit of the leather artisans who come from the communities of the Scheduled Caste (SC).

Objectives Of The Swavalambi Scheme Karnataka

This state government scheme for street vendors comprises various essential objectives that make the whole scheme unique and different from others, such as:

The monetary aid resolves one of the main issues. i.e., limited funds.

  • Fixed places of business are more likely to attract customers. The scheme is expected to increase the sales of leather artisans and also to reduce their dependence on middlemen who purchase at relatively low prices but sell at high prices, incurring a major loss for the artisan.

  • With the introduction of this state government scheme for street vendors, the authorities are working on turning traditional leather artisans into innovative and independent entrepreneurs with their own sales establishments. This would help in earning a stable income and not fluctuating as they did before.
