The Union Territory of Puducherry introduced a scheme called the HIV/AIDS Pension Scheme. It is a welfare scheme created for people who are often stereotyped and socially excluded just because they are suffering from an illness called HIV/AIDS. There is no permanent cure for HIV/AIDS; hence, people suffering from this illness have to go through long-term medical treatment, which cannot be considered cheap.
To make their already difficult lives a bit easier, the authorities of the Union Territory of Puducherry created this welfare scheme. The scheme provides its support to the people in various forms, such as a regular monthly pension, access to medical treatments, like Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART). This scheme not only provides tangible benefits to eligible beneficiaries but also empowers them by recognising the fact that their identities can never be tied down to one single illness, as a human being deserves much more and is much more than just one aspect of their lives.

Before going into the specifics of the scheme, all of us need to understand this tabooed illness called HIV/AIDS. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, which is a virus that directly attacks one’s immune system, specifically the CD4 cells. If a person catches it and the doctors detect it at an earlier stage, a treatment called Anti-Retroviral Therapy is administered, which makes their life expectancies and their quality of life better and longer.
However, if it goes undetected, which it often does, the virus grows and turns into AIDS, which stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. This is the most advanced stage of HIV, which severely damages the immune system of a human being. This means that small injuries or infections can be life-threatening for people with AIDS. Treatment like ART therapy can improve their lives.
One significant thing to clarify regarding this illness is that it is not only transmitted through sexual contact. This virus can be transmitted when a person comes into contact with another infected person’s bodily fluids through various ways other than sexual intercourse, like using contaminated needles or syringes.
The Union Territory of Puducherry launched a scheme, especially for people with HIV/AIDS, called the HIV/AIDS Pension Scheme. The primary objective of the scheme is to provide as much support as possible to eligible beneficiaries, enabling them to access whatever resources they need and manage their illness in the best possible way. Support is provided in various forms, such as monthly pensions, and availability and access to medical treatments, like the Anti-Retroviral Therapy.
Several objectives of the HIV/AIDS Pension Scheme make it useful and unique, some of which are described below in brief points:
The primary objective of this government scheme for HIV patients in India is to provide regular monthly pensions to people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. This not only takes away their monetary burden but also helps them lead better and healthier lives.
Another crucial aim of the HIV Pension Scheme is to provide quicker and easier access to related medical treatments, like Anti-Retroviral Therapy. The schemes also encourage people with the illness to come for regular follow-ups to ensure that they are following the course of the treatment, which is the only way to live healthily when it comes to this virus.
The HIV/AIDS Pension Scheme comes along with a range of benefits for its beneficiaries. Some of the key benefits are mentioned below for one’s better understanding of the scheme:
| Pension amount (monthly) | Age |

| Rs. 2000 | People between the ages of 60 and 79 years old |
