The government scheme also assists in sustainable industrial development and environmental protection, as coir is a renewable and biodegradable material. The coir industry has been identified as one of the traditional village industries in India and has been deemed as employing thousands of persons, including women and rural households.
The training element is the starting point of this scheme. The participants get hands-on training on all aspects of coir processing and coir product making.
The primary objective of the training programme is to create employment opportunities for rural residents by equipping them with industry-relevant skills in coir production. The training also aims to raise awareness about the business possibilities of coir products and promote entrepreneurship.
The Coir Development Program is designed to create a pool of skilled workforce for the development of coir industries and also to sustain the traditional skills related to coconut fibre processing.

Participants are provided with hands-on training in the production of coir rope using coconut fibre and traditional and modern methods of production.
The programme also includes the manufacture of a coir mat; this allows the trainee to understand the processing and finishing stages in the manufacturing process.
Training activities are carried out on quality enhancement, product longevity, and the effective utilisation of raw material.
Participants are made aware of techniques which they can apply to set up their own small-scale business or employment in coir industries.
The Development of Coir Industries programme encourages the use of natural and eco-friendly materials, which help to build sustainable livelihoods.
The duration of the training programme is six months. During those times, trainees are provided with ongoing support, practical modelling, and hands-on work with experienced trainers.
