The fisheries sector is one of the most significant sectors, especially for the Union Territory of Puducherry, as it generates employment and supports the coastal communities living there. For the improvement of the sector and the conditions of the fishermen, the Union Territory of Puducherry introduced a scheme called the Subsidy Scheme for Purchasing Wooden/ Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP)/ Steel Mechanised Boats, which is a sub-scheme of a broader government initiative named the Financial Assistance for Availing Subsidy Components for the Development of Marine Fisheries.
The focus area of the scheme is to provide subsidies to fishermen so that they can either purchase or upgrade to mechanised boats made of wood, FRP, or steel, as these materials are much more durable and stronger in comparison to others. This scheme is expected to bring a positive impact on the growth and development of the fisheries sector and ease the daily lives of fishermen.

The Subsidy Scheme for Purchasing Wooden/Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP)/ Steel Mechanised Boats is a government scheme launched by the Union Territory of Puducherry, under the implementation of the Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare. It is a sub-scheme of a broader government initiative called the Financial Assistance for Availing Subsidy Components for the Development of Marine Fisheries.
The main aim of the scheme is to encourage more fishermen to shift towards using mechanised boats made up of some specific material, such as wood, fibre-reinforced plastic, or steel. This is not just a moral encouragement; through the scheme, authorities also provide subsidies to fishermen so that they can either purchase new boats or upgrade their old ones without facing any financial difficulties. The holistic objective of the scheme is to grow and develop the fisheries sector, not just by quantity but by quality too.
The FRP boat subsidy scheme comprises various essential objectives that make the whole scheme unique and different from others, such as:
One of the key objectives of the government scheme for fishermen is the upgradation of boats. Registered beneficiaries of the fishing boat subsidy scheme are provided with subsidies so that they can either purchase new advanced boats or upgrade the ones that they already have. This not only helps them in modernising their boats but also reduces the financial burden of the same.
Through the FRP boat subsidy scheme, fishermen are encouraged to purchase mechanised boats made from particular materials like wood, Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP), or steel. These materials are especially promoted as they are durable and much stronger compared to other materials from which boats are made.
The ultimate objective of the wooden boat purchase subsidy scheme is to enhance the capacity of the UT’s fisheries sector through the adoption of advanced technological measures, like mechanised boats. With the help of this scheme, fishermen are also encouraged to adopt new and advanced measures of fishing, like navigation systems, safety devices, etc., making the whole work of fishing much easier than before.
The primary benefit that gets unlocked with the fishing boat subsidy scheme is the subsidy it provides to its beneficiaries. The breakdown of the subsidy based on boat type is described below in detailed points for one’s reference:
Applicants are provided with 50% subsidy, which can go up to a maximum amount of Rs 7,50,000. This is for a mechanised boat of a length of around 47 feet with nets linked to banks for the purchase of a new fishing vessel.
For a steel mechanised boat of a length of around 45 to 54 ft. with nets, a subsidy of 50%, which can go up to a maximum amount of Rs 11 lakhs, is given.
50% subsidy, which can go up to a maximum amount of Rs 2.5 lakhs, is provided to the beneficiaries for the conversion or modernisation of their currently owned mechanised fishing boats (unit cost Rs 5 lakhs).
Applicants who wish to upgrade their current mechanised fishing boats with a size of 43 feet or more for tuna long lining are provided with 50% subsidy, which can go up to a maximum of Rs 5 lakhs (unit cost Rs 10 lakhs).
