The Interim Budget presented on February 1, 2024, aimed to present farmers as one of its major stakeholders. The Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the budget highlighted 4 major stakeholders of the Budget, that need special care and attention.
Government schemes and initiatives introduced in the past were analysed and their success was highlighted. The Minister also announced the introduction of new schemes, especially in the agricultural sector. One such scheme for farmers that was announced is the Atmanirbhar Oilseeds Abhiyaan. Let us learn more about this govt scheme.
The Atmanirbhar Oilseeds Abhiyaan is a prospective scheme that will be introduced by the government through Budget 2024. The budget aims to diversify the development of the agricultural sector and thus is planning to support and facilitate oilseed farming in the country.
The sarkari yojana identifies oil crops such as mustard, groundnut, sesame, soybean, and sunflower. The government plans to promote research and development for these crops to provide farmers with more information about these crops and to introduce revolutionary methods in their farming to increase output.
Value addition to the economic contribution of oilseeds in the farming sector will be increased through this Sarkari Yojana. The government also aims to introduce crop insurance for oilseed farming and promote the use of modern techniques and implements for the farming process.
One major objective of this govt scheme is to market and create linkages in production and consumer chains for these products. The word ‘atmanirbhar’ in the scheme suggests how India wishes to become self-dependent in oil production and consumption, without having to rely on other countries for the same. Overall, it is an empowering govt scheme.

This Sarkari yojana aims to use several strategies to boost domestic oilseed production. Some of the expected strategies are:
Financial incentives: The govt scheme would provide farmers with financial aid and subsidies on various necessary materials such as seeds, fertilisers, and pesticides.
Improved irrigation and infrastructure: The Sarkari Yojana aims to improve the existing irrigation facilities and practices used for oilseed cultivation. It also aims to develop the necessary infrastructure such as storage units and processing units.
Promotion of high-yielding varieties: The govt scheme aims to enhance the quality of production by giving the farmers access to various related materials needed for improvement.
Training: The scheme aims to organise and plan several training programs for the farmers and educate them about oilseed farming practices and sustainable farming methods.
Supply chains: The Sarkari Yojana will work on strengthening the supply chains by linking farmers with marketplaces for oilseed production and processing. Supply chains are integral for reducing costs and ensuring fair prices for the farmers.
The Atmanirbhar Oil Seeds Abhiyan is indeed a thoughtful venture of the government of India. It will help the oilseed farmers to prosper and flourish while improving crop quality and quantity. Government aid will help these farmers to go a long way. The government has started multiple schemes for farmers such as the e-gopala app, pradhan mantri kisan samruddhi kendras, and many more. Hopefully, the oil seeds Abhiyaan will be as successful as them!
