The first scenario wherein you can apply for a road tax refund is when you discard your vehicle. All you have to do is visit the official website of your Regional Transport Office of the state where your vehicle was officially registered, or physically visit the office. However, please note that to do this successfully, you need to discard your vehicle before the expiry of the vehicle’s Registration Certificate (which is usually valid for 15 years).
The second scenario wherein you can apply for a road tax refund is when you move from one state to another. The request for a refund is to be submitted to the Regional Transport Office of the state from which you are moving out.
Vehicle owners are required to submit some documents while claiming a road tax refund. The list of those documents is as follows:
Vehicle’s insurance policy
No Objection Certificate (NOC) by the Regional Transport Office (RTO)

Individuals who do not pay their road tax on time will be subjected to punitive measures, like penalties and fines. The fines are based on the type of offences, whether it is a first-time offence or a repeat offence:
If it is a first-time offence, individuals would be required to pay a fine which would be equal to the road tax amount of two quarters.
If it is a repeat offence, individuals would be required to pay a penalty worth the road tax payment for a year. In special cases, the penalty can be of road tax worth two years as well.
Road tax payment is one of the most significant taxes that every vehicle owner is required to pay and comply with on time. This tax is not a burden but a necessity that allows the government to keep up the quality of roads and the construction of new paths for smoother and quicker transportation.
The authorities have created various state-run portals for the payment of road tax so that vehicle owners can complete the process from the comfort of their homes, as per their own convenience. Therefore, we urge you to make timely payments toward road tax, or allow us to pay on your behalf, because the government cannot function optimally without our support.
