Warning! Scammers Targeting You With Fake RBI Voicemails—Here’s How To Protect Yourself

A new scam is making its way to mobile phones, and this time fraudsters are pretending to be from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). These scammers are sending fake voicemails claiming your bank account will be blocked due to supposed credit card fraud. These messages are completely fake, as confirmed by the PIB Fact Check. In this article, you’ll learn how these scams work and the steps you can take to protect yourself.

Fake RBI Voicemails: How Scammers Operate

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), PIB Fact Check revealed the scam, warning users about fake voicemails designed to trick people into sharing sensitive information.

The voicemail message claims:

“All bank accounts in your name will be blocked in the next two hours. For more information, please press 9. Namaste, this is Bhartiya Reserve Bank—your credit card has been involved in fraudulent activity.”

If the recipient presses 9, they are connected to a scammer pretending to represent the RBI. The scammer then tries to steal personal details or even carry out fraudulent activities like transferring money from the victim’s bank account.

How to Stay Safe from Fake Calls

Fake calls are a common way scammers try to trick people into sharing personal information. Staying alert and following simple steps can help protect you from these scams. Here’s how you can stay safe from fake calls:

1. Be Alert to Unknown Calls

Always exercise caution when receiving calls from unfamiliar numbers or unexpected sources. Genuine organisations, including banks, will never ask for sensitive information over unsolicited calls.

2. Confirm the Caller’s Identity

If someone claims to represent a bank, government agency, or any official institution, verify their identity. Always use contact information available on their official website to confirm the call's authenticity.

3. Keep Personal Information Private

Never share details such as your bank account number, credit card information, passwords, or OTPs with unknown callers. Legitimate institutions will not request such details over the phone.

4. Avoid Falling for Urgent Requests

Scammers often create a false sense of urgency to make you act without thinking. If a call demands immediate action, take a moment to assess the situation carefully.

5. Disconnect and Report Suspicious Calls

If you suspect a call is fraudulent, disconnect immediately. You can report these calls to platforms like Chakshu or the Sanchar Saathi portal, which help authorities take action against scammers.
