Fisheries is one of those sectors that deals with perishable goods, and hence its quality highly depends upon its timely transportation from landing centres to marketplaces. Improper transport or delays while making the deliveries can result in the fish going bad and unsuitable for consumption, thus incurring huge losses to the fishermen.
To address these issues, the Union Territory of Puducherry introduced a scheme called the Grant of Subsidy for the Procurement of a Vehicle, implemented by the Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare. It is a part of a much bigger initiative called the Puducherry Development of Shore-Based Facilities, Ice Plants, Service Units, Infrastructural Facilities, and Quick Transport Facilities.
With the help of this government scheme, fishermen can reap the benefits of huge subsidies and purchase specialised vehicles created only for the fulfilment of one purpose, and that is transportation. Proper transport vehicles with equipment can result in smooth and quick deliveries of produce from the fisheries sector.

The Grant of Subsidy for the Procurement of a Vehicle is a transport-related initiative launched back in the year 2010 by the Union Territory of Puducherry, implemented by the Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare. It is a sub-scheme of the broader government initiative called the Puducherry Development of Shore-Based Facilities, Ice Plants, Service Units, Infrastructural Facilities, and Quick Transport Facilities.
The main aim of the vehicle purchase subsidy scheme is to provide adequate subsidies to the fishermen so that they can purchase vehicles created especially for transportation purposes. With the help of such specialised vehicles, fishermen can easily transport their produce without it going bad. The authorities have also worked on the transport network that fishermen can follow while making deliveries to various marketplaces and shops. This not only preserves the quality of the produce but also reduces the rate of wastage.
The government vehicle assistance scheme comprises various essential objectives that make the whole scheme unique and different from others, such as:
The key objective of the government scheme for fishermen is to improve the transportation of the produce of the fisheries sector. Any produce that comes from this sector is perishable, meaning they have a time-limited shelf life, after which they are not good for consumption. Such goods need to be transported as efficiently and quickly as possible, something that this scheme focuses on.
Registered beneficiaries of the scheme receive adequate subsidies to purchase various types of vehicles designed for transport-related purposes. This subsidy is a highlighted feature of this government vehicle assistance scheme, as it removes the financial burden from the shoulders of the fishermen.
Through the scheme, authorities are also working to establish distribution networks connecting key places, such as wholesale markets, retail outlets, and other locations, to strategically transport produce from the fisheries sector.
The primary benefit that gets unlocked with the vehicle purchase subsidy scheme is the subsidy it provides to its beneficiaries. The breakdown of the subsidy based on boat type is described below in detailed points for one’s reference:
Registered beneficiaries are provided with a 50% subsidy, which can go up to a maximum amount of Rs 75,000 for the purchase of an auto goods carrier of a ton capacity.
A 50% subsidy, which can go up to a maximum amount of Rs 1.5 lakhs, is provided to those who are interested in purchasing a mini truck of one to three ton capacity.
People interested in purchasing a mini lorry with a three to five ton capacity are provided with a 50% subsidy, which can go up to a maximum amount of Rs 3.5 lakhs.
Beneficiaries of the vehicle purchase subsidy scheme are entitled to get a 50% subsidy, going up to a maximum of Rs 5 lakhs, for purchasing an insulated fish van with a five to ten-ton capacity.
A 50% subsidy, which can go up to a maximum amount of Rs 15,000, is provided to those who are interested in purchasing a moped with an insulated ice box.
People interested in purchasing engine spares for their boats are provided with a 50% subsidy, which can go up to a maximum amount of Rs 2,000 per annum for each boat.
Note that the subsidy amount will be directly credited to the bank account of the beneficiaries, eliminating the need for any middlemen in between.
