Minister Sitaraman announced in budget 2025 an allocation of health cards and registrations with the e-shram portal for 1 crore online gig workers. This is done in the realisation of their contribution towards the digital economy. With these new work reforms, the government is aiming to provide better social and financial security to the workers of the gig and platform economy. As part of the wider framework to assist urban workers, the government is also introducing coverage for healthcare services under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) scheme for nearly 1 crore gig workers in the country.

The PM SVANidhi scheme geared toward street vendors and road businesses is expanding to offer the following:
Increased bank loans to small business owners.
UPI-enabled credit cards have a limit of ₹30,000.
Business assistance and financial education.
This initiative will assist gig economy workers in gaining access to credit, expanding their businesses, and attaining financial security.
The Union Budget 2025 marks a momentous leap for online gig workers being recognised as employees with the introduction of identity cards, e-Shram registrations, and social protectors. With health assistance, improved welfare, and a sustained social security system, the government aspires to enhance the economic status of gig and platform workers in India.

For the first time, online gig workers were defined with specific legal terms in the Code on Social Security 2020 which offers the following security benefits:

Accidental insurance
Health & maternity insurance
Old-age protection
Moreover, the Ministry of Labour & Employment has also instructed the aggregators to onboard platform workers on the e-Shram Portal.
