The National Livestock Mission (NLM) was launched by The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying under the Government of India in the year 2014. The NLM aims to increase the production and productivity of livestock in India, all in a sustainable way so that it is feasible.
The National Livestock Mission, implemented and imposed by The Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries aims for quality development and improvement in livestock production and productivity.
This is done by solidifying various activities within the department, which helps increase the production of meat, goat milk, egg and wool to name a few. NLM carries out activities related to animal disease control, breed improvement, fodder development and livestock insurance.
Along with this, it also works for employment generation, and entrepreneur development helping boost the economy of the nation, as well as tackle a challenging subject of unemployment that is relevant in this day and age.
The National Livestock Mission aims for the following, which will help in their ultimate agenda of improving production and productivity:
Employment Generation: The NLM aims to create employment opportunities all across the country, especially in small poultry and fodder sectors for the promotion of holistic and much-needed self-employment as well.
The NLM intends to increase productivity per animal and also aims to do so by breed improvement for the most feasible and high-quality product attainable which is under the cost cap as well.
An increase in the production of meat, egg, goat milk, wool and fodder also falls under one of the major objectives of the NLM.
NLM works to increase the availability of fodder and feed to reduce the demand imposed and aims to do so by strengthening the fodder seed supply chain and also increasing the availability of certified fodder seeds.
To improve production and productivity, the NLM also undertakes disease control programmes and aims to strengthen veterinary services.
The NLM provides a backup option to the farmers by providing livestock insurance in cases of untimely issues that may come up and affect them financially.
The NLM consists of the following key components for the development of the livestock sector:
Financial assistance to states for scheme implementation, which helps the state help kickstart the scheme so that the required demographic can avail it as per their convenience
Periodic tallying of livestock population, which educates the respected officials of how much feed and fodder and other required materials for utmost quality produce is needed.
Assistance for fodder cultivation, conservation and availability.
Group medical insurance for animal owners and compensation for loss of animals, helping the farmers compensate for the loss of livestock which enables them to invest in its replacement.
Training programmes for livestock farmers, artisans and entrepreneurs, for a better understanding and also educating the farmers and what needs to be done and what not for maximising the quality of produce as well.
