It is the 21st century and along with time and technology, humans have evolved as well with an exponential increase in their wants, desires, and aspirations. However, one thing that hasn’t changed drastically are need for survival and one of the major wants of modern times is electricity, without which everyday tasks are incomplete. Electricity doesn’t only light up our houses but our lives as well (ironically, which is quite literal at times).
We are at that point in this technological era where it would be a sin to even try to imagine our lives without the existence of electricity. However, at the same, in the same technological era, many of us don’t enjoy the privilege of electricity because it has become more of a luxury due to soaring prices and lack of infrastructure development.
To tackle these issues and ensure that electricity remains a necessity and never a luxury for anyone, the government of India paved the way with Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan also known as the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. The government scheme aims to empower rural and remote parts of the country by providing affordable solar power solutions to increase accessibility and a shift from traditional sources of electricity to renewable and green sources of electricity.
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan) is part of another scheme launched by the Indian government called the PM-KUSUM scheme. The govt scheme aims to provide affordable solar power solutions to people residing in the rural or remote parts of the country. The Yojana offers financial aid in the form of subsidies so that people aren’t financially burdened by the scheme. A range of people like farmers, rural residents, and small businesses can apply for the scheme by contacting the concerned authorities.

The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is one of those govt schemes where technology and the environment intersect without one harming the other. Can you imagine consuming junk food every day without developing any health concerns? Well, our wish might be unrealistic but the PM Surya Ghar Yojana is exactly that but at the same time the opposite, something that seemed unattainable but achieved in the end.
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana primarily focuses on farmers along with rural residents and small businesses. Its expanded focus makes it one of the most appealing and accessible schemes for the citizens of India.
As the scheme focuses on solar power panels which is a renewable source of energy, it sends a very strong message not only to the people of India but the world that India is committed to conserving the planet’s health. The scheme ensures that people don’t experience any sort of financial burden and hence provides financial aid for the installation of solar power panels.
As we are climbing up the ladder of development with technology, we are forgetting that everything in this world, including the world has a tolerance capacity and we cannot keep pushing it. The Indian government realised this and hence introduced the scheme to promote sustainability by reducing the carbon footprint that comes from using traditional sources of energy.
The govt scheme was designed to provide free electricity of up to 300 units per month for at least 10 million households by providing subsidies for the installation of solar power panels. It has a budget of around 75 crore and beneficiaries can access financial aid for systems ranging from 1 to 3 kW with subsidies ranging from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 78,000 based on the size.
Around 1.29 crore people have registered under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana and have generated over 17 lakh jobs. In a month alone, the authorities received over 17 lakh applications for the installation of solar power panels.
The govt scheme has been proven effective not only for beneficiaries but also for the people installing the systems. After all, there’s nothing like a scheme that both, delivers benefits and generates employment.
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is a transformative scheme that combines both, technology and sustainability in the right proportions which happens rarely. The Indian government has travelled a long way when it comes to designing the right schemes for the betterment of the people and the nation as a whole and the only way through which we all can appreciate them would be by registering under the scheme, if eligible or spreading awareness about it so that eligible people can.
