The educational sector is one of the most crucial sectors of the country as it lays a foundation upon which all of our personal and professional lives stand. And one of the components that support the educational sector is the coaching institutes. Coaching institutes have been helping students for ages by giving them extra personalised guidance and mentorship so that their weak concepts can be strengthened and they can excel in academics or curricular activities.
Coaching institutes have been growing exponentially and are entering various fields and disciplines to help students clear various competitive examinations and secure admissions to their dream institutions. However, unfortunately, like other sectors, this sector has also been infiltrated by those individuals who desire to make more profit by doing illegal and unethical activities.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has announced the imposition of heavy penalties on coaching institutes for publishing misleading advertisements and fooling students and their families. Education isn’t merely a service we opt for, it is a sacred foundation we build for ourselves and our loved ones so that we can grow up to be successful adults.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority has announced the imposition of heavy penalties on coaching institutes for publishing misleading advertisements. This decision of the Central Consumer Protection Authority has been taken after observing some instances wherein coaching institutes have been fooling students and their families by publishing misleading and false advertisements.

Some instances which influenced the Central Consumer Protection Authority’s decision are mentioned below for one’s reference:
Vajirao & Reddy Institute published an advertisement of a total of 617 successful candidates stating that they took XXX courses to qualify. However, in reality, all the 617 candidates took a course called the Interview Guidance Programme which helped them qualify and get into the final selection of CSE.
As such important information was concealed from numerous students and their families to fool them into enrolling in some other particular course, the CCPA imposed a penalty of Rs 7 lakh on Vajirao & Reddy Institute for publishing misleading advertisements.
CCPA has also imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh on Edge IAS for publishing fake results of students in the UPSC CSE 2023 examination in advertisements. They also claimed that 13 successful candidates took some courses but in reality, the courses were completely different.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority has also imposed penalties on various other coaching institutes for publishing misleading advertisements like Sriram’s IAS and Shubhra Ranjan's IAS study. A total of 45 notices have been issued by CCPA and penalties of Rs. 71 lakh have been imposed on around 22 coaching institutes.
Coaching institutes are one of the most significant aspects of our lives. Maintaining their integrity is crucial as millions of students enrol in them to shape their futures. The Central Consumer Protection Authority’s decision to impose penalties on coaching institutes that publish misleading advertisements was long coming and a step in the right direction.
