Mission Mausam

People worldwide have been consistently climbing up the ladder of growth and development and in the same process, we all exploited our ultimate home. i.e. earth. Recently, the whole world has been seeing and experiencing drastic climate change ranging from unpredictable seasons, rising sea levels, melting of ice caps, etc.

The year 2023 was reported to be one of the hottest years globally, the frequency of natural disasters has increased by 80%, and global emissions are estimated to increase by 30%. This list can go on and on but it is time for us to take responsibility and save our home.

The governments of almost all countries are working on various measures to reduce climate change and restore what we lost. The government of India announced a new mission called Mission Mausam to tackle climate change through several measures promoting sustainability.

What Is Mission Mausam?

Recently, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) celebrated its 150th anniversary in New Delhi, and on this special occasion, the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi announced the launch of a government program called Mission Mausam. The mission has been dedicated to protecting the climate from any further drastic change through several sustainable measures.

Particulars Of Mission Mausam

There are some key details of the newly announced mission that one should know about. All the major details of the mission are mentioned below for one’s better understanding and reference:

  • Mission Mausam would work under three bodies. i.e. the Indian Meteorological Department, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting funded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

  • The government of India allocated around 2000 crore rupees for the first two years of the mission.

  • The govt would invest in several hi-tech measures to improve the quality of weather surveillance to make accurate weather forecasts.

  • Mission Mausam aims to benefit several key sectors like the agricultural sector, aviation and defence sectors, tourism, and other such sectors.

  • The newly announced mission will also work on strategies to manage the aftereffects of extreme weather conditions like rainfall, hail, fog, lighting, etc., and ultimately protect the people.

  • The govt aims to invest in research in the areas of cloud physics to understand and achieve the goals of the mission.

  • For the first time, India will be establishing its first cloud chamber at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune. Cloud chambers usually look like cylindrical drums wherein clouds are created so that scientists and researchers can study them. India is working on a special cloud chamber that would allow scientists to study monsoon clouds.
