The construction sector plays a major role in the country’s economic development and contributes to the development of infrastructure, housing, commercial establishments, and overall industrial growth. It is one of the largest employment-generating sectors for both skilled and unskilled people. However, the workers in the sector face a wide range of challenges like unsafe and irregular working conditions of employment, lack of social security, and others.
To address such issues and protect the workers in the construction sector, the Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act of 1996 made a provision to establish the Meghalaya Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (MBOCWW). It is a statutory body formed to protect the rights and work on the overall welfare of the construction workers in Meghalaya.
