What Is The Sagarmala Project (सागरमाला परियोजना)?

The Sagarmala project is an initiative of the government of India aimed at transforming and developing ports. The motto of this govt scheme is ‘Port Led Prosperity’ which indicates the ambitious nature of this project. The Sagarmala project aims to improve the performance of India in the logistics sector.

The Sagarmala Project was launched under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31 July, 2015 during the Maritime India Summit 2016. It was launched as a part of the National Perspective Plan to boost the growth of India’s coastline and maritime sector.

What Are The Components Of The Sagarmala Project?

The Sagarmala Project has five major components or pillars. Different development projects have been assigned under each of these pillars to achieve the goals of this government project.

  • Port modernisation & new port development,

  • Port connectivity enhancement,

  • Port-led industrialisation,

  • Coastal community development and

  • Coastal shipping and Inland water transport

What Are The Key Objectives Of The Sagarmala Project (सागरमाला परियोजना)?

The Sagarmala Project is an aim-driven initiative of the government of India, which seeks to achieve the following objectives:

  • Port Modernisation: Upgrading existing ports and developing new ones to handle increased cargo efficiently.

  • Port Connectivity: Improving connectivity between ports and the rest of the country through road, rail, and inland waterways.

  • Port-led Industrialisation: Establishing industrial towns or areas near ports to reduce transportation costs and time.

  • Coastal Community Development: Enhancing the livelihood of coastal communities through skill development and job creation.

  • Coastal Shipping and Inland Water Transport: Promoting the use of coastal shipping and inland waterways as cost-effective and eco-friendly modes of transport.
