How To Report Cybercrime And Online Fraud In India?

As we are moving forward and turning most of everything digital, criminals have been keeping up with the transition as well by carrying out numerous criminal activities through the internet like online fraud.

With increasing the use of the Internet for social interactions, financial transactions, and others, people have been falling prey to cybercrimes as well. To protect people from such suspicious activities online, the government of India has taken several measures to minimise the prevalence of cybercrimes in the country, and one such measure is the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) established under the Ministry of Home Affairs that enables people to report the incident as soon as it happens.

Understanding Cybercrime & Fraud

Any illegal activity that is conducted using computers or the internet is called cybercrime. It is imperative to stay vigilant against these types of cybercrimes. Some of the most common forms of cybercrime are:

  • Online Fraud: When certain deceptive practices are used to fool people and gain monetary benefits, it is termed online fraud. For example, investment scams, credit card fraud, etc.

  • Cyberbullying: To harass, bully, or disrespect someone through social media or forums and attack them psychologically.

  • Hacking: Accessing someone else’s computers or networks without their knowledge for personal gain.

  • Phishing: Manipulating people through fake emails or websites into giving their sensitive usernames, passwords, bank details, etc.

  • Identity Theft: Obtaining and using someone else’s identity online like their name, photos, etc without their knowledge.

How To Report Cybercrime In India?

Unfortunately, if one falls prey to any form of cybercrime, they can report it by following certain steps:

  1. Identify the type of crime

It is crucial to first identify which type of cybercrime has happened to report it correctly.

  1. Gather Evidence

Collect any form of proof such as screenshots of emails, messages, calls, and websites that may help in the investigation later.

  1. Report it to NCRB
  • Visit the official website of NCRB.

  • Click on the ‘Register a Complaint’ button on the top of the homepage.

  • Select the appropriate type of cybercrime.

  • Fill in the required details such as the complaint’s nature, name, contact number, and description of the incident.

  • Attach any relevant proof, if you may have.

  • Submit your complaint after which a unique complaint ID will be generated.

  • Track the status of your complaint through the website by using the complaint ID.

  1. Reporting to the Police Station or Cyber Crime Cell

In addition to filing the complaint online, you can also visit the nearest police station or a cybercrime cell.

  1. Contacting Bank

Immediately, contact your respective banks or any other financial institution and bring it to their attention as they have specialised fraud helplines to take preventive actions such as blocking the card or refusing the transaction.

  1. National Cybercrime Helpline

One can call the national cybercrime helpline which is 155260 as well to keep track of their complaint.

Citizens must report cybercrime by using the NCRB’s portal and other agencies so that the perpetrators can be arrested and no such thing happens in the future with anyone else. Action that is taken timely also ensures a smooth and quick investigation process.
