Government Services 2026

The way citizens access government services in India has changed significantly with the growth of e-governance. Many situations that used to require several trips to government offices, physical papers and complicated paperwork can now be done digitally. Approved in 2006, the National e-Governance Plan laid the foundation for this transition by introducing Mission Mode Projects aimed at making public services more accessible, efficient, and transparent.

It later extended through the Digital India programme as mobile services, online delivery and digital infrastructure entered the areas of everyday governance. In this article, you will get detailed information about the National e-Governance Plan in 2006 and much more.

The 44 MMPs in various sectors

The National e-Governance Plan originally included 27 Mission Mode Projects covering important public-service areas. Four additional projects covering health, education, public distribution and postal services were subsequently added, taking the number to 31. The digital delivery mandate was re-extended in the e-Kranti approach of Digital India, and the Mission Mode Projects ranged across the central, state and integrated services.

It wasn't just about getting government information on the web. The broader objective was to enable citizens to apply online, upload papers, pay online, monitor applications and get certificates online, as appropriate for a service to be delivered entirely online.

Now the scale of digital governance has grown significantly bigger than in the original article. By April 2026, States and Union Territories together offered 25,209 e-services, while more than 81% saturation had been achieved for 2,124 identified mandatory e-services. Among all of these services, 9,093 were provided by local governance and utility services, with the possibility of daily public interactions that are digital.

Initiatives In Various Sectors

The list below contains the names of the platforms launched as government initiatives under the National e-Governance Plan:-

e-Mandi

Keeping electronic trading as a platform, e-Mandi facilitates agricultural trade operations between farmers and buyers. It aims to make the buying and selling of farm produce more transparent and efficient while helping farmers get better and more competitive prices, particularly small and marginal farmers.

Land Record

Digitisation of land records has simplified land information for citizens and provided an easier way to get copies of land records without relying on manual registers. Depending on the state and service, online systems can provide access to Records of Rights, cadastral maps, certified documents and other land-related information.

Digitisation of land records can also contribute to greater transparency, as it reduces reliance on physical records and makes it easier to verify information. Some land services require one-time payment of applicable charges and online applications, which also limit frequently repeated visits to government offices.

School Education Mission Mode Project

Digital governance in education focuses on improving access to information, learning resources and administrative services. Registration and processes related to students' education and learning resource access services have been increasingly assisted by online systems.

The growth of digital education infrastructure has also enabled students and teachers to gain access to education outside of school settings. This is especially vital to improve access with limited physical education resources.

National Scholarships Portal

The National Scholarships Portal facilitates the entire scholarship-related process in a digitised manner. The platform will be utilized by sutilisedfor registration, application, verification and reimbursement formalities under the participating scholarship schemes. Its digitisation includes the ease with which students can follow the application process at various stages and minimise the need for unnecessary office visits. It also helps streamline the flow of scholarship applications and beneficiary information.

Aadhaar & Direct Benefit Transfer

Digital systems connected with Aadhaar have played a pivotal role in welfare delivery as per the requirements of beneficiaries. Direct Benefit Transfer is designed to transfer financial benefits electronically, reducing the need for multiple intermediaries.

Since the time of the original article, the scale of digital payments has increased significantly. The broader digital public infrastructure now enables delivery of benefits and services to a scale that was unimaginable when the e-governance programmes were first devised.

Central Excise and Customs

Digitalisation has made several processes connected to taxation, customs and trade much simpler. Online systems allow businesses and other users to submit information, complete documentation and track processes electronically.

Transferring the activities to a digital platform minimises paperwork, enhances processing efficiency and ensures a clear transaction trail. It also simplifies the path for companies that routinely engage with government processes to adhere to them.

MCA 21

Within digital corporate services, companies can accomplish several regulatory tasks online. These include company incorporation, filing of documents, changes in company details and access to certain public records.

These are digital services that have greatly decreased reliance on physical documentation and enhanced corporate compliance. Several business processes can be conducted without the employee's presence, with electronic files for applications and filing.

Passport Seva

Due to online applications and appointment bookings, passport-related services have become dramatically more organised. Applicants can complete the initial application process digitally, select an appointment and track the progress of their application.

This is a model that shows how e-governance might incorporate online applications with essential physical verification systems. Citizens aren't expected to visit an office throughout the process, but they can do a number of the steps online and only visit a designated centre if necessary.

e-Tourist Visa

The digital visa system is an improvement that makes applying for visas easier for eligible foreign nationals. Details of applicants may be provided to the appropriate authorities online, with required payment, after which they would receive approved electronic visa documentation.

This reduces paperwork and provides travellers with a more convenient method of completing visa-related formalities before travelling.

e-Courts

The digitalisation of court services has introduced online access to several judicial processes and case-related information. Digital systems support activities such as case filing, registration, case management, cause lists and access to case information.

The common goal is to enhance the accessibility and organisation of judicial processes, while minimising reliance on physical documentation. Digital access also enables people to know and follow what is happening without having to physically appear at court premises to keep track of information.

Common Services Centres 2.0

The importance of assisted digital services centres does not diminish, as not all citizens will have access to smartphones and computers, a stable internet connection or digital skills. These centres provide a physical access point through which citizens can use multiple online government and other essential services.

The network has expanded substantially since the original article. By 2025-26, there were more than 5 lakh such centres, catering to over 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats, with over 48 crore transactions completed over the last year. This is yet another reminder that assisted digital access is still as relevant as fully online services.

e-District

District-level digital service connects several citizen-facing government processes closer to citizens via the Internet. The services might include certificates, applications, local registrations and other district-level requirements on a state-by-state basis.

Government-to-business-to-district services have helped bring about the transition of several routine processes to a digital interface. This can be helpful in the case of citizens needing documents or services from district and local administrations.

Mobile Governance

A mobile phone has emerged as one of the most salient avenues for digital public access. Mobile governance is the practice of making government services accessible to citizens through applications and mobile-friendly platforms without relying on a desktop computer.

The scale of mobile governance has increased sharply. In February 2026, the unified mobile service platform provided 2,446 services to 240 Government departments, and cumulative transactions totalled 737.20 crore.

e-Hospital – Online Registration System

Digital health care services have minimised the necessity to go to hospitals solely to finish registration or book an appointment. Online systems will assist with appointment booking and will also help with registration and access to some reports and hospital-related information.

These services are particularly helpful for those who need to have a hospital visit planned ahead of time. They can also assist healthcare organisations in scheduling appointments and easing crowds at registration desks.

Jeevan Pramaan

This important issue for pensioners is made easier with the digital life-certificate offering. Eligible pensioners, ners however, will have the option of submitting a life certificate digitally via a biometric process instead of completely by physical submission.

This is especially useful for older people since it can help them save on unnecessary travel and make it easier to adhere to pension requirements.

Vikaspedia

Digital Knowledge Platforms that have made agriculture, education, health, social welfare services, energy, governance, etc. available through various Indian languages. Multilingual access is a key element in that everything related to digital inclusion relies on the ability of citizens to access the internet, but also to be able to use the information.

Accessible languages can therefore help to close this gap between availability and usage of public information on the Internet.

MyGov

Citizen-engagement websites enable citizens to interact with discussions, polls, consultations, etc., related to public governance. This transforms e-governance from being one-way information to citizen participation.

It also indicates that e-governance is not just about digitising forms and documents, and that the broader expansion of digital public services is developing. In the age of digitalisation, more and more is linked to the delivery of benefits, public information and welfare activities of government on integrated system platforms.

The digital governance ecosystem in India has since evolvedtime since the time of the initial article. By July 2025, for instance, over 56 crore people were using the digital services for documents, while over 500 crore transactions had been made through the one- Roam mobile service platform. The broadband subscribers as well have also gone up from around 25 crore in 2014-15 to over 103 crore in 2024-25, providing a much wider base for delivery of digital services.

Conclusion

E-governance has shifted citizens' interaction with public services; many services have been relocated from physical offices to digital platforms. From certificates, pensions and scholarships to healthcare, education, taxation and welfare services, online systems have made government services more accessible and convenient. Today, as per the National Portal of India, it has over 13,900 online services, showcasing the extent of digital service delivery.

Some platforms that combine multiple service offerings have also helped to decrease the need for frequent office visits.
