Why This Fellowship Is Important?

The D. D. Kosambi Fellowship is an important opportunity for Goan researchers and scholars due to Kosambi's legacy of transcending academic disciplines through innovative and broad-ranging scholarship. By creating a research fellowship named after him, the Government of Goa is clearly announcing its commitment to stimulating research that is both empirical and interpretive in nature. The fellowship’s focus on Goa will also allow researchers to delve into specific matters relating to the State's heritage, family history and culture (including migration, colonial legacy, linguistic and cultural changes, coastal ecosystem), amongst others, in greater depth.

Areas Of Study Covered Under The Fellowship

The D. D. Kosambi Fellowship supports and accepts applications for research in areas directly related to the State of Goa and its people. The following topics under D.D national programs are some of those the fellowship will consider for funding:

  • Political and economic transformations occurring in Goa following colonialism.

Step 2: Prepare your project proposal, which will explain your proposed objectives, methodology, timeline and anticipated deliverables.

Challenges & Scope For Improvement

There are many ways to enhance the impact of this fellowship through additional improvements:

  • Transparency in the timely selection of potential fellows. A rolling calendar and commentaries would allow applicants to receive more feedback to improve their applications.

  • Providing additional support for research infrastructure. In addition to stipends, it would be beneficial to provide travel funds, limited access to speciality archives, and small grant funds for research activities or digitisation.

  • Providing links between research fellows and their corresponding university mentors. Improved mentor-mentee relationships will probably lead to better dissemination of research findings to a broader audience. Mentors may also help provide access to their networks.

  • Clearly defining policies regarding extension and renewal requests for research fellows. Policies should include time extensions for fellowships where fieldwork remains unfinished due to difficulties accessing archived material.

Future Vision For The Fellowship

With increased support and clarity in processes, a reinvigorated D. D. Kosambi Fellowship history could become a hub for creating knowledge related to Goa, including:

  • Providing short-term "mini-grants" for both archival-based research and oral history projects.

  • Creating an easy-to-search digital repository of final reports and datasets.

  • Creating formal partnerships with university institutions and other cultural institutions for the purpose of conducting workshops and publicly disseminating information and research findings.

Conclusion

D. D. Kosambi Research Fellowship Programme can provide relevant assistance to those working on Goa's History, Culture or Society through targeted support to the fellows. There are 3 fellowships each year, and funding is agile and clearly defined, and the scheme helps to build local capacities for academic development and research.

By supporting improved delivery methods of research, there are also improved opportunities for increased dissemination of the research done with the Fellowship Programme. There is a greater opportunity for the Fellowship Programme to support the academic and cultural landscape of Goa. Those interested in applying to the Fellowship Programme should monitor and adhere to the official guidelines and watch for the announcement released by the Department of Art & Culture on an annual basis.
