The Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) has recently taken a significant measure regarding the deactivation of all inactive Aadhaar accounts. This is an impending decision that has finally been taken by the authorities to strengthen the existing Aadhaar system and make it safer and more secure for India's citizens.

Read the article to learn more about the UIDAI’s decision to deactivate inactive Aadhaar card accounts and its possible implications.

Deactivation Of Inactive Aadhaar Accounts

UIDAI is the main regulatory body that oversees all the functions related to Aadhaar cards, such as application, Aadhaar biometric unlock online process, etc. As a significant and long-awaited step, the Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) decided to deactivate all the inactive Aadhaar card accounts of deceased individuals. Following the decision, officials from UIDAI referred to the records maintained by the Civil Registration Systems (CRS) of 24 states and the Union Territories through the Registrar General of India.

After a comprehensive research and background check, UIDAI deactivated the Aadhaar accounts of around 1.17 crore individuals who have passed away. An official also informed that similar actions are being taken in non-CRS states/UTs, wherein 6.7 lakh deaths have been recorded.

Future Measures By UIDAI

Following the deactivation of aadhaar cards of such a large number of people, the Unique Identity Authority of India is planning and working on creating a section called the ‘Reporting of Death of a Family Member’ in the myAadhaar website and application (Android & iOS) for the 24 CRS states and UTs. One can complete various other functions from the UIDAI portal such as Aadhaar biometric unlock online.

As per this new section, family members would be required to authenticate their identities and then report some details about the deceased individual so that the UIDAI can validate the information and complete the process of deactivation of aadhaar card of the deceased individual.

In addition to this, UIDAI is also planning to work in collaboration with entities like banks and the state governments to stay as updated as possible about the citizens of India. They are also conducting a pilot study on the same, wherein information is being taken from people who are above the age of 100 years to check whether they are alive or not.

Implications Of Deactivation Of Aadhaar Card

The system of the Aadhaar card is one of the most crucial systems in India. It is the backbone of identifying and verifying the citizen's identity; hence, it becomes automatically important to keep the system updated and secure. UIDAI decided to deactivate the inactive accounts, especially those of deceased individuals, for two primary reasons. i.e., to keep the records updated and eliminate instances of identity theft for fraudulent activities.

Conclusion

The UIDAI’s decision to deactivate the inactive Aadhaar card accounts of deceased individuals is a step in the right direction. This would not only keep the records updated but also eliminate instances of fraudulent activities wherein scammers steal the identity of the deceased.
