In the Budget 2025 announcement, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the Jal Jeevan Mission will carry on until 2028 with more funding. This mission launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019 strives to give every rural household in India easy access to clean drinking water.
The number of rural households that have been connected with tap water in India is presently 15.43 crore out of a total of 19.36 crore, indicating a coverage of 79.67%. Despite this, the original goal of 2024 now seems impossible, so the deadline has also been moved. The new goal now set is to have 100% safe drinking water access in India.
The government plans to further establish MoUs with states and union territories to improve water service delivery and sustainability.

The coverage in funding for the Jal Jeevan Mission has grown substantially. In 2025-24, the estimated funding was set at ₹70,163 crore. However, it was later brought down to ₹67,000 crores for 2025-26.

2024-25 | 70,163 | - |
2025-26 | 67,000 | - |
This year’s funding indicates a balanced approach, ensuring continuation while maintaining fiscal discipline.
The Jal Jeevan Mission as there was still much work that required completion. Plenty of rural households have yet to install tap water connections. Improving water supply systems and long-term water security remains a focus of the plan.
Unfinished Target: Originally intended to achieve 100% coverage by 2024, it has been noticed that only about 79.67% of households in rural areas have received access to tap water.
Infrastructure Challenges: Some far-flung areas are still lacking active water supply systems.
Ensuring Long-Term Sustainability: With new Memorandums of Understanding with states, progress and water security can be greatly improved.
The Jal Jeevan Mission has enabled rural Indian people to drink clean water. The campaign extended till 2028 will further advance the reach of tap water to every household in rural India, With the help of an allocation of ₹70,163 crores, the government seeks to cover every household and achieve better management and sustainability of water resources over a longer period.
