India is a country of tradition and culture that harbours innumerable values and one such value is of considering cows as sacred animals representing prosperity. These sacred animals are also one of the primary sources of milk production, organic manure, and biogas and help significantly in the growth of the agriculture sector. However, recently, the conditions of cows have been deteriorating due to several reasons like rising fodder costs, illegally killing them for consumption, etc.
To ensure that these challenges are reduced and cows remain protected, the state govt of Haryana announced the launch of several state govt initiatives for the protection of cows in the state.
On the joyous occasion of Makar Sankranti, Shri Subhash Barala who is a Rajya Sabha MP attended the Shri Krishna Gaushala’s Gau Samvardhan at Kabrel village and announced that the state govt of Haryana would be launching various schemes for the protection of cows in the state.
The primary aim and objective of all the govt schemes would be to protect cows and also encourage and attract people toward cattle rearing. Barala referred to cows as ‘Gau Mata’ and also emphasised upon the fact that Gaushalas have been contributing to the nation’s economy for decades by not only protecting cows but by producing vermicompost and cow extract as well.
The former minister of the state, Dr Kamal Gupta also attended the event and shared with everyone that the state govt schemes are already helping Gaushalas in accessing fodder and other needed resources at affordable prices. Many other significant personalities also attended the event such as MLA Randhir Panihar, Banwari Lal Poonia, HPSC member Jyoti Binda, and BJP District General Secretary Ashish Joshi.
For the people of India, cows have held a sacred spot for centuries but that isn’t their only contribution. According to the 20th Livestock Census of 2019, India is reported to be the home of around 193 million cattle, and a report of 2023-24 reported that India produced around 2,39,299 tonnes of milk which makes it one of the largest milk-producing nations worldwide.
However, despite these numbers and the sanctity the animal holds, around 50 lakh cows are abandoned by their owners when they stop producing milk. Those cows are then victims of accidents, butchering, or deaths due to consuming harmful items like plastic.
The government schemes introduced by the state of Haryana aim to tackle all these issues and protect sacred animals from humans itself.
The state government of Haryana’s decision to launch several schemes for the protection and promotion of cattle rearing would turn out to be one of the most needed initiatives as cows don’t only hold a religious place but are major contributors to the nation’s economy.
