The Maharashtra Student Scheme also known as the MahaDBT Scholarship Scheme was launched by the state government of Maharashtra to provide monetary help to students from the economically weaker sections of society like SCs, STs, EBCc, OBCs, and other marginalised groups.
The MahaDBT Scholarship Scheme covers tuition fees, exam fees, and other related expenses. It includes several sub-schemes under it like Post Matric Scholarship and others. The scheme operates through the MahaDBT platform.
Advocate Owais Pechkar, representing the petitioner Naveed Abdul Saeed Mulla, a Chartered Accountant from Navi Mumbai, requested a quick hearing. Owais Pechkar argued that the schemes would put an extra financial burden on the government.
"The total cost is around Rs. 24,600 crore, which is a huge burden on the debt-ridden state that already is in debt of Rs 7.8 lakhs crore," the plea said.
Maharashtra already has Rs. 7.8 lakh crores debt and the additional Rs. 24,600 crore burden would make it even more difficult for the state to repay the amounts. The government schemes are also being criticised saying there is a political motive behind the Cabinet passing it.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray reacted to the announcement of the 'Ladka Bhau' Yojana by calling it a "gimmick" and doubting the government's true intentions. Shiv Sena asked the government to give out the full yearly amount of the scheme all at once. He criticised the scheme for giving money only to skill development students and questioned how useful such programs are.
The bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar refused to grant an urgent hearing and said "Urgency means demolition or a person is going to be hanged”. They said that the hearing would be listed when the time is right.
The government of Maharashtra introduced these state govt schemes to help the men and women in the state financially and also help them tackle unemployment to get a better livelihood. But with the criticisms from the opposing parties and the High Court, it seems like it will take some time before the government schemes are approved and implemented.
