The Nari Niketan Scheme was launched in 1976 and aims to shelter poor and helpless women in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Launched by the Social Welfare Department, Nari Niketan means ‘Women’s homes’ and currently, there are 280 individuals in them across the Union Territory.
Jammu and Kashmir has a female literacy rate of only 58% and the unemployment rate for women stands at 41%. This figure shows that women are at more risk of being without any economic support if they are alone.

The Nari Niketan Scheme was launched by the state government of Jammu & Kashmir as a social welfare programme to provide necessities to the women of the state. The Nari Niketan aims to improve the living standard of women by helping them access minimal facilities like shelter, food, a safe environment, clothes, etc. Nari Niketan also works on establishing Nari Niketan Anath Ashram where women can live and access all the services.
The key goal of the Nari Niketan is to rehabilitate the women who have been deserted or are financially incapable of supporting themselves. Along with this, this Sarkari Yojana also:
Aims to provide support to widows who cannot live on their own.
Provide care, protection, and skills training to help them be self-sufficient and can be done so in the Nari Niketan Anath Ashram.
The inmates are supported in this Nari Niketan till they are well off to be independent via aid from other government schemes, jobs, or even marriage.

Interested women first need to ensure that they fit into the eligibility criteria to successfully apply for the govt scheme. The Nari Niketan Scheme eligibility criteria includes:
A resident of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
A female.
They have to be deserted, impoverished, or widowed.
The applicant must not have any source of income or livelihood.
Interested and eligible students can complete the application process of the govt. scheme by following the below-mentioned steps:
Applicants have to visit the nearby District Social Welfare Office and request the form for the scheme from the respected authorities.
The form has to be filled with valid documentation and identity verification.
The form must then be submitted with relevant signatures and stamps from the authority to the District Social Welfare Office.
After this is done, applicants can check their status via the receipt received.
