Messages saying it is from PM Narendra Modi have been circulating on WhatsApp. The message offers 3 months of free recharge as part of a government scheme, encouraging WhatsApp users to click on unauthorised links.
PIB Fact Check has clarified that the government is not providing such schemes and that the messages are fake. PIB Fact Check said that the “claim is fake” and “Government of India is running no such scheme. They also said that “this is an attempt to defraud”.

According to PIB Fact Checker, the message offers 3 months of free recharge as a part of a government scheme. Along with the message an unauthorised link is sent to the users. The link redirects to fake websites to get access to WhatsApp users’ data. Clicking on the link will lead to fraudulent activities.
The message also claimed that it was the last day of this scheme to create panic and a sense of urgency among people.

As of now, PIB Fact Check has not confirmed what exactly happens if the link is opened. But usually, such links will redirect to an unauthorised website where the people will be convinced to enter their banking information or ask them to make payments to claim the offer.
If people enter their details, the scammers will use that information to do defrauding activities such as banking fraud.

Avoid the message, do not engage.
If the offer is too good to be true, then it is.
Trust your instincts.
Do not forward such messages.
Educate others on such frauds.

If a person has engaged with such messages, report immediately.WhatsApp has started a report feature allowing users to report such accounts and messages.
The government has also introduced the Chakshu portal under Sanchar Sathi to avoid scams. The portal allows users to report fraudulent calls and messages like lottery offers, job scams, SIM card scams, etc.

Stay alert for offers that sound too good to be true. Be updated and educate people on such fraudulent activities to quickly understand if a message is a scam or not. Report any such messages on WhatsApp or the Chakshu portal to protect yourself and others.
