How PMMVY Supports Rural Mothers?

As per National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) data, 1 in 3 Indian mothers do not receive full antenatal care. Only 44% of women avail themselves of adequate breastfeeding support. Most gaps exist across rural areas. By promoting institutional deliveries, immunisation, and nutrition, PMMVY Yojana aims to bridge this rural-urban divide. They enable poor families to better care for expectant mothers. A key provision empowering rural mothers is

  • Financial Support. The PMMVY Scheme cash incentives especially benefit rural mothers relying on informal work as an income source. Wage compensation drives a greater focus on personal health and nutrition.

  • Healthcare Access. Conditional transfers under the PMMVY Scheme also expand public healthcare access. More rural women register for antenatal appointments, immunisations, nutrition counselling, and institutional delivery. This reduces neglect while navigating fragile health systems in remote villages.

  • Infant Health and Nutrition. The scheme advocates early breastfeeding and vaccination to enhance survival. Thus, we also focus on nutrition rates among rural newborns prone to higher risks. Grant disbursal based on meeting nutrition criteria incentivizes breastfeeding. This still lags at 64% amongst village mothers, as against 74% across cities.

  • Administrative Ease and Portability. Rural women often get excluded from state maternal benefit schemes. This is due to enrollment complexities, delays, and access barriers. By linking PMMVY with Aadhar, a direct benefit transfer is made into bank accounts. Also, with PDS portability, village mothers can enjoy seamless, paperless access to the national scheme.

Thus, PMMVY enables rural women to overcome critical financial, administrative, and geographic barriers. Also to seek adequate pregnancy care and nutrition—pivotal to breaking intergenerational malnutrition. Over 2 crore rural mothers have already been assisted since 2017.

Conclusion

These changes have been observed after the inception of the PMMVY Scheme as the health condition of the mothers as well as their children especially in the rural areas across India has stabilised. Of late, the targeted implementation of the cash incentive scheme, encouraging institutional care and awareness of nutrition have supported a dramatic decline in the mortality of both mothers and their babies. As it remains easy to apply for the program due to mobile vans and support for rural mothers PMMVY Scheme makes sure that rural and urban areas have equal health care and that all mothers and children should have a healthy beginning.
