The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) launched the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) programme on July 31, 2016. It provides care free of charge to all pregnant women in India on the 9th of every month.
The aim is to provide financial help to them. The programme offers the least guaranteed package of care services to women in their 2nd or 3rd trimester of pregnancy. It is available at designated government health facilities.
The goal of the PMSMA programme is to improve the quality of antenatal care (ANC). This includes diagnostics and counselling services. All these are part of the Reproductive Maternal Neonatal Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) strategy.

Here are the primary objectives of the PMSMA programme that it seeks to achieve:
Make sure that every pregnant woman sees a doctor at least once during her second or third trimester.
Improve the quality of these examinations by administering essential tests. Also addressing any health concerns such as anaemia or excessive blood pressure.
Give advice and maintain track of the care provided.
Provide extra checkups for people who have missed their regular visits.
Identify and track pregnant women with elevated risks.
Plan for a safe birth and be prepared for any complications. Particularly for individuals with medical conditions.
Malnutrition should be detected and treated early.
Provide particular care and attention to young and teenage mothers.

Since post- and pre-childbirth procedures are expensive, such programmes are set up by the Indian government for the welfare of pregnant women. The PMSMA scheme further ensures new mothers go through a safe pregnancy experience and also gives proper facilities to the child in their growing phase.
