The government of India launched the Make in India initiative in the year 2014 for the sustainable growth and development of the country by promoting all sectors not just traditional ones. The primary aim of the govt initiative is to boost the manufacturing sector and increase economic growth along with enhancing its reputation in the ‘Ease of doing Business’ index to attract foreign companies to invest in businesses in India.
The Make in India initiative focuses on several sectors and has numerous sub-schemes and programs under its umbrella. The whole govt program has its foundation in promoting manufacturing in India to make the nation independent. i.e. Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
There are numerous reasons to justify the existence of the Make in India initiative. Some of the major reasons are mentioned below in brief:
Dependence: India has depended on other countries for sourcing many goods and services. Only a handful of sectors like IT and BPO were growing but the growth of two sectors hardly makes up for the whole country. It was tagged as the ‘back office of the world’, something that exists for sure but never comes to the limelight.
Poor quality of manufacturing: The quality of manufacturing in India is really poor due to several factors like poor condition of the sector, inadequate supply of materials, etc. The manufacturing sector only contributed 15% of the total economic growth and needed a boost.
The only sector that contributed to almost nothing was the manufacturing sector and hence the government of India needed to find ways to boost the sector for good. After all, manufacturing is not something that one can ignore, it is one of those sectors which can take a country to new heights.
The Make in India initiative focuses on 25 sectors. These sectors are the driving force of the nation and boosting them will not only impact the economy and GDP of the country but also impact the global positioning of India in the world. All the sectors are listed below in detail for one’s reference:
Aerospace and Defence
Automotive and Auto Components
Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices
Bio-Technology
Capital Goods
Textile and Apparel
Chemicals and Petrochemicals
Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM)
Leather & Footwear
Food Processing
Gems and Jewellery

There are several initiatives under the Make in India program. All the government yojana are mentioned below in detail with just one primary aim and that is to bolster the economic growth of the nation:
Sectors like railways, insurance, defence, and medical devices are now open for Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs).
Exclusive focus is also being given to increasing India’s rank on the ‘Ease of Doing Business’ Index wherein the country climbed up to 23 points and in 2019 grabbed the 77th position.
Digital portals are launched such as of Shram Suvidha portal, eBiz portal, and others in line with the Digital India initiative.
Permits and licences required to begin a business in India have been relaxed so that more and more people can enter the sector and start their businesses with unique ideas.
Other major changes have been introduced in various areas such as time-bound clearances for applications of foreign investors, automation of processes for registration with the Employees State Insurance Corporation and the Employees Provident Fund Organisation, decreasing the number of documents for exports, and ensuring compliance through peer evaluation, self-certification, etc.
The government has also announced the creation of 5 industrial corridors to speed up the growth of the sector. Those 5 corridors are:
Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC)
Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC)
Bengaluru-Mumbai Economic Corridor (BMEC)
Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC)
Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC)
There are numerous govt schemes introduced under the umbrella of the Make in India initiative. All the schemes are surely different but they have just one primary aim and that is to contribute to the country’s development. The list of those schemes is mentioned below:

BharatNet: The government of India along with the telecom company called BharatNet has been working on expanding the boundaries of the network to the rural and remote areas of the nation.
Sustainable India: India has been ranked 4th position in the world in harnessing power from winds and 6th position in harnessing solar power.
Since the launch of this govt initiative, it has proven itself to be not only advantageous but a great decision taken for the country’s growth. The Make in India project has innumerable benefits that would make India reach new heights such as:
Job generation: The govt initiative focuses on employment generation for the people of India.
Economic growth: The govt program aims to boost the economic growth of the country by focusing on sectors like the manufacturing sector that have been lagging.
Support to Indian Manufacturers: The Make in India project aims to support small and big businessmen in India to increase the growth of the manufacturing sector.
Attracting foreign investors: The government initiative aims to attract foreign investors to invest and bring hi-tech technologies to India which would help the nation greatly in the future.
Make In India has been working wonders for the country, the sectors of the country, and the people of the country. However, there are some challenges and criticisms that it is facing such as:
Negative impact on agriculture: The boost to the manufacturing sector would negatively impact the agriculture sector as 60% of the total land of India is agricultural land.
Competition: Attracting investors from abroad would significantly increase the competition for Indian businessmen, especially small business owners and farmers. The competition might not be fair as foreign investors carry an edge in terms of technological measures.
Environmental hazard: As the Make in India project focuses on the manufacturing sector, it might contribute to pollution levels and bring significant unhealthy changes even though sustainability is taken into account.
The Make in India 2.0 initiative is an updated model of the Make in India initiative. The primary aim of both the initiatives is the same with just some minor changes like the Make in India 2.0 initiative focuses on 27 sectors rather than 25 sectors with added focus on sustainable growth and incorporation of hi-tech technology.
The main difference between Make in India and Made in India is that Make in India promotes domestic and foreign companies to manufacture various goods and services in India while Made in India encourages and promotes goods and services made from scratch in India only.
In the year 2024, India celebrated 10 years of the Make in India initiative. It hasn’t been an easy or a smooth journey however, it has been an adventurous and rewarding journey as throughout these years, the Make in India project has achieved and accomplished several of its set milestones starting from boosting the manufacturing sector to infrastructure development.
The Make in India initiative was launched by the government of India with just one goal and that was/is to make India reach its highest potential and secure a global positioning. The government scheme has been proven to be effective and efficient so far and will be in the future as well.
