Chakshu Portal App was launched by government of India to keep an eye on the fraudsters faking themselves all the time and scamming the general public. Online scams and digital fraud are rising at an alarming rate in India, making everyday mobile and internet users increasingly vulnerable. Fraudsters now use fake calls, phishing messages, and WhatsApp scams to deceive people and steal money or personal data. As per data from the CyberCrime Coordination Centre, nearly 7,000 cybercrime complaints were registered every day in May 2024 alone.

This marks a sharp increase of 113.7% between 2021 and 2023, highlighting the urgent need for strong preventive tools. To tackle this growing threat, the government has introduced user-friendly digital platforms like the Sanchar Saathi Chakshu portal to help citizens report suspicious calls and messages quickly and safely.

Latest News

Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Sanchar Saathi portal will soon be accessible through a dedicated mobile application, often referred to as the upcoming Chakshu portal App, making fraud reporting more convenient for users. He stated that with the integration of the Digital Intelligence Platform and Chakshu, the government expects a significant improvement in the detection and prevention of cyber fraud.

Additionally, DoT is working closely with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Department of Financial Services to refund money to victims. So far, nearly ₹1,008 crore has been returned to accounts that were earlier frozen due to suspected fraudulent activity.

What Is The ‘Chakshu’ Portal?

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) announced the launch of the ‘Chakshu’ portal by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Monday. The main objective of the portal is to help users report fraudulent calls and messages easily and act as a spam call blocker.

On the Chakshu portal login, a user can report fraudulent calls, SMS, and WhatsApp messages. Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned that the DoT’s Sanchar Sathi Portal will also be accessible through a mobile app soon. He said, “With Digital Intelligence Platform and Chakshu, we think the pace at which we were able to detect and prevent cyber frauds will significantly improve further”.

How To Report A Suspicious Activity Through The Chakshu Portal?

If a user notices any suspicious calls or messages, they can immediately file a Chakshu portal complaint online. Once submitted, the complaint is reviewed by telecom authorities.

If the number is found guilty after verification, strict legal action is taken and the number may be permanently disconnected. Users can also track updates through the Chakshu portal complaint status feature available on the portal.

If a user notices any suspicious calls or messages, they can immediately report it on the Chakshu portal. The report will then be looked into by TRAI. If found culpable by TRAI, legal actions will be taken and the number will be revoked.

What Is The Grievance Redressal Portal?

The grievance redressal portal allows users to report genuine mobile connections that may have been disconnected by mistake. If a number is wrongly flagged while investigating a Chakshu portal complaint, affected users can raise a grievance through the Sanchar Saathi portal.

DoT is also collaborating with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Department of Financial Services to refund ₹1,008 crore to accounts that were frozen due to suspected fraud.

What Is The Spam Reporting Platform?

The Chakshu portal will trigger the verification of suspected fraudulent numbers and work as a spam call blocker. If one number is being reported multiple times, then the verification will be sent to the number. If the verification is failed, then the number will be disconnected by TRAI.

Importantly, while submitting a Chakshu portal complaint, the identity of the complainant remains confidential. DoT has confirmed that personal details of users are not shared with any third party.

What Is The Digital Intelligence Platform?

The Digital Intelligence Platform will allow a unified space for banks, payment wallets, social media platforms, and Telecom Service Providers (TSPs). This space is to share data regarding all suspected fraudulent connections between all platforms. This will help each platform to know what numbers to look out for and take precautions.

What Are TRAI’s Recommendations on CNAP?

CNAP stands for Calling Name Presentation Service. CNAP was introduced to help users view the registered name linked to the number. So when a person gets a call from an unknown number, the registered name linked to the number will be shown. This helps people decide if they should take the call or be cautious.

“User safety and protecting users’ privacy is most important. As a user, it is my right to know who is calling me. It is important for people who are calling to at least identify themselves, said Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Conclusion

The Chakshu portal is a major step towards making India’s digital ecosystem safer. By enabling citizens to report telecom-related frauds through a structured and secure system, the portal empowers users to act against cyber threats. While it does not handle financial cybercrimes directly, filing a Chakshu portal complaint helps authorities block fraudulent numbers before serious damage occurs.

Staying alert, avoiding sharing personal details, and using official platforms like Chakshu can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to scams.
