Udyam registration is an official government process related to the Ministry of Micro, Small, & Medium Enterprises (MSME). This digitised process replaced the old Udyam Aaadhaar system for more transparency and security. By completing the registration process, MSMEs receive their own Udyam card, which serves as proof of registration for businesses under the MSME category and provides them with several benefits, like easier access to loans with lower interest rates, eligibility for government schemes and subsidies, priority when applying for tenders, protection against delayed payments, and others.
The government of India introduced revised classification limits for MSMEs through the Union Budget of 2025-2026. The revised guidelines increased the investment limit and the annual turnover limit by 2.5 times. The revised guidelines aim to help enterprises expand their operations and get access to better technological measures and credit options.
The revised MSME classification limits 2025 / Budget 2025 are laid down below in tabular format for one’s reference:
| Type of enterprise | Investment limit | Annual turnover limit |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to Rs 2.5 crore | Up to Rs 10 crore |
| Small | Up to Rs 25 crore | Up to Rs 100 crore |
| Medium | Up to Rs 125 crore | Up to Rs 500 crore |
When it comes to Udyam registration, apart from enterprises, retail and wholesale traders can also apply to receive MSME recognition. The authorities allowed this particular expansion of the eligibility primarily to support small traders so that they can opt for formal credit options and not informal ones, participate in renowned platforms, like GeM, and other such benefits.
The specifics, like eligibility and benefits of the Udyam registration for traders, are slightly different from those for MSMEs. This limitation is also the main reason why traders cannot avail themselves of the benefits of all kinds of MSME schemes, as some of them are strictly designed for the aid of MSMEs. Despite all the limitations, Udyam registration is extremely useful, especially for those traders who are looking to grow or secure funds.
The Udyam Registration comprises various key features to help and contribute to the growth of the MSMEs of India. Some of the features are listed below:
Simplified process: The Udyam Certificate Online process is completely carried out online and is user-friendly. Interested entrepreneurs can register their micro, small, or medium enterprises without any fees.
Unique ID Number: After registration, businesses receive a unique Udyam Registration Number (URN), which serves as their permanent identity for accessing the scheme’s benefits.
Government databases: The Udyam portal is linked with other government databases, such as PAN and GST, to verify the details later.
Free of cost: Udyam Registration is completely free of cost, which reduces the financial burden from the entrepreneur’s shoulders.
Automatic Upgradation: Enterprises that cross a certain set category are automatically upgraded without the need for re-registration.
Registering under the MSME framework provides businesses with financial and legal advantages that support growth and stability. Below are some key benefits of the Udyam certificate for MSMEs:
Access to loans and credits: Registered MSMEs can apply for loans at lower interest rates, sometimes with no collateral as well. They can also access special MSME loan schemes like Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana.
Government subsidies: Registered businesses are eligible to apply for various government schemes that offer subsidies on services like patent registration and capital investments.
Tax exemptions: MSMEs under Udyam Registration can enjoy tax benefits like exemption from certain state-specific taxes. Reimbursement for the ISO certificate is also provided.
Protection against delayed payments: The Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, protects businesses against delayed payments beyond 45 days. For the resolution of the same, the authorities created a specialised portal called the MSME Samadhaan / delayed payment portal.
Concession: Registered businesses can enjoy 50% on trademark and patent fees, thus reducing their financial burden.
Some additional benefits of Udyam registration are described below in detail.
One of the main advantages of Udyam registration is the easier access to collateral-free loans under the CGTMSE (Credit Guarantee Fund Trust) scheme. The Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises helps MSMEs secure safe loans from renowned financial institutions without the meddling of any third-party guarantees. These loans are partially backed by the government, which makes them unburdensome for enterprises.
Udyam-registered MSMEs can register themselves on the GeM Portal / Government e-Marketplace, which is an online platform used by government departments for procuring services. MSMEs can list their services or goods in the GeM portal and sell them to the government authorities directly. One of the advantages that comes along with registration is related to tenders, like the exemption of certain deposits while applying for government tenders.
Under Section 43B(h) / 45-day payment rule, Udyam-registered MSMEs can clear up their pending payments within 45 days of selling goods or services. However, if the buyer delays the payment for more than 45 days, they won’t be able to claim it as a tax deduction until clearing the payment first. This provision protects MSMEs and helps them get paid on time so that they can avoid cash-flow issues.
To register under the Udyam Registration system, a business must abide by the set Udyam certificate eligibility criteria:
| Enterprise | Investment in Plant & Machinery or Equipment | Annual Turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro Enterprise | Up to 1 crore | Up to 5 crore |
| Small Enterprise | Between 1 and 10 crore | Between 5 and 50 crore |
| Medium Enterprise | Between 10 and 50 crore | Between 50 and 250 crore |
Note that if your turnover exceeds ₹40L, GST registration may be required alongside Udyam registration.

The MSME certificate doesn’t require annual renewal as it provides registration for a lifetime. However, if your business details (such as investment, turnover, or contact information) change, businesses need to update their information. One can log in using their URN and update their details.
The Udyam registration certificate for traders helps small shopkeepers and traders to access government schemes and easier credit. If business details change, you can request a Udyam registration certificate correction online by logging in with your URN and updating the required fields.
While doing Udyam registration, MSMEs are required to select an appropriate National Industrial Classification (NIC) Code that represents the kind of activities done by their business entity. The NIC framework was created by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
Every business entity needs to choose the correct NIC code so that the government can easily and accurately identify the nature of their business and verify that it is linked with the correct industry in the MSME database.
While doing the Udyam registration, search for your industry type, choose the closest industry, and then select the corresponding NIC code using the NIC list. One can also add additional NIC codes if a business is involved in multiple activities.
The difference between the old Udyog Aadhaar system and Udyam registration is laid down below in tabular format for one’s clarity:
| Component | Udyog Aadhaar | Udyam registration |
|---|---|---|
| Registration process | Registered through the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) | Registered through the Udyam Registration online portal |
| MSME classified on | Self-declared investment | Classified based on investment and turnover information of the business unit |
| Connected to | Not connected with other databases | Connected with the PAN and GST databases |
| Certificate | Udyog Aadhaar Certificate | Udyam Registration Certificate |
| Transparency | Limited | Higher transparency, as this system is connected with other verified databases as well |
As the Udyam registration has been introduced in replacement of the Udyog Aadhaar system, business entities previously registered under the UAM are required to do the Udyog Aadhaar migration / UAM to Udyam process to continue receive MSME related benefits, like access to formal credit options, eligibility for government schemes, etc.
The migration process is completely online and very straightforward. The steps of migration are described below for one’s better understanding:
Step 1: Please visit the official Udyam registration portal. Step 2: Navigate to the option concerning ‘existing Udyog Aadhaar holders’ and click on it.
Step 3: Enter your Udyog Aadhaar number and verify via the One-Time Password received on the registered phone number.
Step 4: Ensure to provide or update all the required information that needs to be filled or updated, like PAN card number, GST, and other such information.
Step 5: Submit the details, and after verification, you will receive your Udyam registration certificate.
The Udyam Registration is an essential process that every Micro, Small, & Medium Enterprise is supposed to carry out. The process of registration is completely digitised, which not only provides added convenience to business owners but also makes it easier for them to formalise their business operations and access benefits, like financial aid. Along with MSMEs, traders can also apply for a Udyam card, as it is a practical step toward the growth of the business entity.
