FASTag employs RFID technology for automated toll payments that allow effortless travel on Indian highways. If individuals need to close their FASTag account and apply for a new FASTAG with another bank—such as banks by the RBI, better service and BONUS offers, or sale of vehicle—then they must deactivate their FASTag account with the previous bank and apply for a new account.
This article will review why users choose to switch to FASTag, an outline of the process to apply online, required documents, and how to avoid the pitfalls for a successful, smooth transition.
Here’s an overview of key aspects involved in FASTag transfer:
Aspect | Details |
---|---|
Why Transfer | Ban by RBI, better services, policy mandates |
Deactivation | Close old FASTag via app or customer support |
Balance Refund | Request a refund or use up the balance before closing the FASTag |
Applying New FASTag | Online via bank site/app or offline via branches/PoS kiosks |
Documents Needed | Vehicle RC, ID proof, closure confirmation, passport photo (if needed) |
Activation | Affix on windshield, complete KYC, link to wallet or account |
Processing Time | Refund: 7–10 days; Activation: a few days post-delivery |
Individuals sometimes change the FASTag issuer bank because of compliance issues, various superior service offerings, or due to previous general norms:
(i) If the bank has been banned by the RBI for non-compliance, that payment bank cannot issue a FASTag, and thus that FASTag will be void; and users/users will have to deactivate and reapply for a FASTag with an authorised bank.
(ii) When an individual applies for a new FASTag because of the compliance with the issuing bank, under the "one FASTag per vehicle" rule, only the latest activated FASTag remains active and operational for that particular vehicle, and all other FASTags must be deactivated; and
(iii) because, depending on the banks, it may provide lower fees, allow cashback, enable auto-recharge features, and provide better customer service and satisfaction, warranting a switch.

Moving FASTag involves three steps—deactivation, application and activation:
Deactivation must occur before you apply for a new FASTag. You can:
Step 1: Call up customer support of the issuing bank or log in to your FULL FASTag portal or app.
Step 2: Ask customer support to close your account and your vehicle registration number, and your account information.
Step 3: Wait until you are advised, your account has successfully deactivated.
Step 4: When your account has been deactivated, you can request any balance that may have been left in your FASTag account or spend the balance before you deactivated - just follow the bank's refund process.
Once you have deactivated your old FASTag, apply for a new FASTag.
If you want to apply for the FASTag online: Go to an authorised bank's website or APP, and fill in all the required fields, upload all the documents, submit the payment for the fee and wait for the FASTag to be delivered.
If you want to apply for FASTag offline: Go to the bank's branch, official kiosks at the toll plazas, or PoS (point of sale, which are normally retail outlets with an agreement to sell FASTag), and make sure you ask for the FASTag. Submit any documents required, pay the fee and collect your FASTag.
Step 1: Attach the FASTag sticker according to the instructions and make sure that it is securely stuck to your vehicle's windscreen.
Step 2: Link the FASTag to your pre-paid wallet or bank account according to the instructions issued with your FASTag.
Step 3: Make sure you do all the KYC steps - this is the Know Your Customer process. Some banks offer instant KYC via video so you can send your application and get a result very quickly, but it is dependent on the bank's speed of the process.
You will need to collect the following documents for your successful transfer:
The Registration Certificate (RC) for your vehicle.
Recent passport-size photograph (if applicable).
FASTag closure confirmation or reference from the previous bank.

Your old FASTag may have a balance of unused funds after you have deactivated it, and there may be a security deposit; all of these will be refunded or transferred.
Step 1: A request must be submitted through your bank portal or customer service team.
Step 2: Generally, the turnaround time is 7–10 working days, though there are some issuers with longer timelines.
Step 3: Refunds will be processed back to your registered bank account with little to no fees.
You won't experience any disruption in transactions, and I hope these tips help secure your funds:
Be sure to either use the issued old balance or request a refund on the old balance before closing the FASTag.
Be vigilant; there are guidelines against having multiple active tags on the same vehicle. You are allowed only one tag per vehicle.
Be certain you have validly registered to KYC standards: you could experience a delay in activation if you fail to do so.
Be sure to transfer FASTag well ahead of any travel plans, to allow time for the tag to arrive and for the tag to be linked.
Transferring your FASTag to another bank allows for smooth use of toll services, as well as banking advantages and compliance with regulatory issues. The process is simply the closure of your existing tag, followed by the application for a new tag from your bank of preference, submission of supporting documents, and concluding with activation of your tag. Planning and paying attention to details like refunds and KYC will allow you to enjoy your travel hassle-free.
