India is one of the developing countries of the world working its way up the ladder to join the list of developed countries. The nation has come a long way from tackling social issues like criminal activities to under-developed sectors of transportation, education, business, etc.
However, the government of India has shown nothing but hard work and consistency for the efficient growth and development of the nation. The govt has not only worked on the development of the various sectors of the country but also on welfare programs for the upliftment of the citizens.
And the proof of that growth and development is reflected when one observes the performance of the nation in the last 10 years. Our nation has changed itself with time such as by shifting its traditional paper-based working to digitised working, encouraging people, especially those who reside in rural and remote areas to choose formal banking options instead of informal sources, helping people by providing monetary support in various forms like loans, scholarships, etc.
All this has been done through the creation and launch of various schemes, programs, and services. Some of those schemes that have had a major impact on the economy and the lives of people are described briefly in the article.
Continue reading to learn more about those schemes and how have they impacted and contributed to the country’s growth and development.
The government of India launched the Make in India initiative in the year 2014 for the sustainable growth and development of the country by promoting all sectors not just traditional ones. The primary aim of the govt initiative is to boost the manufacturing
sector and increase economic growth along with enhancing its reputation in the
‘Ease of doing Business’ index to attract foreign companies to invest in businesses in India.
The Make in India initiative focuses on several sectors and has numerous sub-schemes and programs under its umbrella. The whole govt program has its foundation in promoting manufacturing in India to make the nation independent. i.e. Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Because of this government program, the export sector has seen tremendous growth, especially in sectors like the manufacturing of electronic goods such as phones. The mobile phone export grew from $0.2 billion in 2015 to $15.6 billion in 2024. Recently, the Indian government also partnered up with Dixon-Vivo, one of the major brands to start manufacturing in India.
Digital India’s mission aims to empower India digitally by providing government services, better infrastructure, and innovations. It guarantees that each individual will be able to take advantage of the enhanced technological advancements. The Digital India mission comprises several other key initiatives such as Startup India, UPI, Digilocker, Rupay, etc.
The Digital India initiative has made India the 3rd largest digitised economy as per Fortune India’s report. The boundaries of the internet have been extended and expanded through the mission and various sectors like e-commerce, payments, delivery of food and other goods, bookings, vaccinations, travel, etc. have started their operations through online platforms.
The Indian government launched the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti Mission also known as the National Master Plan for Multi-modal Connectivity (IAST PM Gati Shakti) in the year of 2021. Through the scheme, a digital platform was created for bringing together 16 ministries of railways, roads, ports, etc. The govt scheme focuses on improving the infrastructures of various sectors for growth.
In the years 2023-24, around 12,300 km long National Highways (NHs) were constructed to extend connectivity and improve the quality of roadway travel. In the past year. i.e. 2024, infrastructural-related projects worth Rs. 15.3 lakh crore were announced which are expected to yield revenue of around Rs. 30 lakh crore. India has also improved its ranking from 54 in the year 2014 to 44 in the year 2018 to 38 in the year 2023 in the World Bank’s ‘Logistics Performance Index’.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) has been launched to provide low-income and affordable housing opportunities to both, people residing in urban and rural parts of the country. Beneficiaries include the Economically Weaker Group (EWS), the Low Income Group (LIG), and the Moderate Income Group (MIG). All major cities of the country are included in the govt scheme and both the lower and middle income groups can benefit from this housing scheme.
Because of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the government has created innumerable houses which has tripled from the year 2020 to the year 2024. As the government scheme is proving to be successful, the Indian government launched its plan to construct 3 crore more houses for the people in need.
The Ayushman Bharat Yojana, officially known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya
Yojana, is one of the largest health insurance schemes launched by the government of India in 2018.
The government scheme offers cashless treatment of up to Rs. 5 lakhs to a family annually, which covers around 1500 medical and surgical procedures. The families are identified through the data of the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) and ensure that people in need of the scheme reap its benefits.
The govt health insurance scheme has proven itself to be one of the largest health insurance schemes in the country. In the year 2014, Indians used to spend around 62% of healthcare expenditures from their own pockets rather than investing in health insurance policies. This has been decreased by 40% in 2022.
The nation and the government of India have travelled a long, difficult, and complex way to stand where it stands today. There still is a lot that we have to cover but sometimes, reminding ourselves about where we are, what have we achieved, and our overall progress helps us in doing better and better. It is not just the nation’s growth, it is your nation’s growth or let’s just say that it is the growth of 1.45 billion people!
