Rashtriya Gokul Mission

The Union Cabinet has sanctioned an enhanced funding of 3,400 crores for 2021-2026 for Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) for the development of the dairy industry in India. The initiative seeks to increase milk production, cattle's genetic quality, and farmers' income through artificial breeding technologies including Artificial Insemination, In Vitro Fertilisation, and genomic studies. The latest modification of the plan also provides grants for Heifer Rearing Centres as well as interest subvention on loans for high genetic merit IVF heifers to achieve systematic breed improvement and sustainable growth of the dairy economy.

What Is The Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM)?

The Rashtriya Gokul Mission is a Central Sector Scheme that aims at better cattle breeding, increased milk productivity, and genetic enhancement in animal husbandry. Its primary goal is to gain remarkable achievement for the dairy farm industry in India through the promotion of Artificial Insemination (AI) and IVF technology along with the preservation of native breeds which further supports dairy production in the country.

With the revised allocation of ₹3,400 crore, the scheme will continue to extend AI services, bull production, sex-sorted semen usage, and farmer training improvements.

Key Features

The Revised RGM sets out new programs aimed at increasing the quantity of milk produced and improving the quality of the cattle. These best practices come with an accompanying subsidy and reward system designed to financially assist farmers for more productive breeding and raising animals.

1. Heifer Rearing Centres

  • Objective: To rear valuable heifers for the eventual production of milk.

  • Financial Assistance: 35% capital cost subsidy to Implementing Agencies.

  • Scale: 15,000 heifers can be housed in 30 housing units.

2. Interest Subvention On Loans For HGM IVF Heifers

  • Objective: To motivate farmers to buy HGM IVF heifers.

  • Benefit: 3% interest subvention on loans from torrent milk unions, banks, or other financial institutions.

  • Expected Impact: Improvement of milk production through increasing the number of high-yielding breeds.

Achievements Under Rashtriya Gokul Mission

The RGM has played a crucial role in enhancing milk production, artificial insemination, and modernising breeding techniques. Here are the major achievements:

1. Increase in Milk Production

  • In the past decade, milk production has surged an impressive 63.55%.

  • Milk availability per capita increased from 307 grams in 2013-14 to 471 grams by 2023-24.

2. Nationwide Artificial Insemination Programme (NAIP)

  • It supplies zero-cost AI services to 605 districts where the AI coverage is lower than 50%.

  • Defending 5.2 crore farmers and over 8.39 crore animals covered.

3. Advancements in IVF & Genetic Research

  • India currently have 22 IVF laboratories located across the nation.

  • So far, IVF has helped birth 2,541 High Genetic Merit calves.

  • Gau Chip & Mahish Chip: Genomic chips developed to improve indigenous bovine breeds.

4. Development of Indigenously Produced Sex-Sorted Semen

  • Gau Sort technology aims to increase the number of female calves born, thus improving milk production.
