The government of India is consistently working on helping its citizens by devising and launching innumerable subsidy schemes and incentives. Subsidies are monetary aids provided to people on several things like food, healthcare services, fuel, etc. to reduce their actual costs and make them accessible and affordable, especially for people from the vulnerable sections of society.
One of the subsidy schemes is the Pratyaksh Hanstan Labh (प्रत्यक्ष हस्तांतरित लाभ) also known as the PAHAL Scheme or the Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG (DBTL) scheme. It is a subsidy scheme provided for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) which is primarily used for cooking purposes. This govt scheme not only protects the health of people as LPG is better and not harmful in comparison to traditional fuels but also the environment as a whole.

The Pratyaksh Hanstan Labh (प्रत्यक्ष हस्तांतरित लाभ) also known as the PAHAL Scheme or the Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG (DBTL) scheme was launched by the government of India in 2014 to provide subsidy on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The main objective of the PAHAL Scheme is to provide subsidies through Direct Benefit Transfer which means that the amount of the subsidy is deposited directly into the bank accounts of the registered individuals and families.
The application process for the DBTL scheme is designed to be as simple as possible so that a large number of eligible people can apply for the govt scheme without any difficulties. The scheme is in line with the government’s effort to protect people’s health which is greatly affected by the use of traditional fuels like kerosene and protect the planet’s health as a whole.
The PAHAL Scheme has some major objectives that outline the scheme’s main goals. Some of its key objectives are listed below in detail:
DBT of subsidies: The amount of subsidies on LPG is deposited directly into the bank accounts of the people who register for this govt scheme which reduces the chances of malpractices like corruption.
Use of cleaner fuel: Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a cleaner fuel in comparison to traditional fuels used for cooking like kerosene which contributes considerably to air pollution.
Easy application process: The PAHAL Scheme uses an organised and easy process of application so that a large number of people can apply to reap its benefits.
Encourages Aadhar linking: The govt scheme mandates people to link their aadhaar cards with their bank accounts to receive the subsidies given on LPG for verification purposes.
There are many benefits to registering for the PAHAL Scheme. Some of the benefits are listed below in detail for one’s better understanding:
Timely release of subsidies: The subsidies given on LPG are released timely in the bank accounts of the registered individuals and families.
Digital transactions: The govt scheme encourages digital transactions instead of cash transactions which aligns with the government’s motive of making a ‘digital India’.
Focus on marginalised groups: The DBTL scheme is a major help for individuals or families from the marginalised sections of society and helps them access cleaner fuel for cooking at affordable prices.
Transparency: The DBTL scheme makes use of direct benefit transfer where the amount of subsidies is released directly into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries, it promotes transparency in the whole implementation process of this subsidy scheme.
