India is a democratic country, meaning every citizen has the right to be treated equally and have the freedom to think, choose, and represent whatever they like and prefer. The government of India takes responsibility for the growth and development of the people and the nation as a whole for which from time to time, they introduce welfare schemes targeting various components of an individual’s life.
Welfare schemes only filter and select people on one criterion and that is each scheme's eligibility criteria but other than that no filtering lies. However, in reality, interested people while applying for welfare schemes come across various problems and one of the major problems is that of discriminatory acts based on their caste, gender, religion, or socio-economic status.
Recently, the Prime Minister of India conversed with a famous podcaster wherein one of the topics of discussion was equality while applying for welfare schemes.

On 16th March 2025, the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi talked about various topics concerning India and one of those topics was elections and equal treatment of people, especially when they apply for welfare schemes.
The PM highlighted the fact that elections in India are one of the most challenging tasks as the nation has a population of around 1.46 billion people. The state governments are expected to do their best to keep the process of voting as smooth as possible.
Last year. i.e. 2024, approximately 980 million Indians registered themselves for voting. The number of registrations is far more than the population of some American and European countries. Out of the total number of registered voters, around 646 million cast their votes in extreme weather conditions like temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius.
The state governments established polling stations across various parts of the country including setting up polling station for one single voter in the Gir forest of Gujarat.
Modi expressed, “My country has more than 2,500 registered political parties. This staggering figure, with such a vast array of political parties, has the power to leave the entire world in awe. My country has more than 900 round-the-clock news channels. There are over 5,000 newspapers published daily. They each play a role in upholding democracy in their own way”.
The government of India doesn’t have blinds upon its eyes regarding the discriminatory treatment of people, especially when they apply for welfare schemes. Hence, they are working on eliminating such instances through various ways such as Direct Benefit Transfer, eliminating middlemen, Aadhaar-based identification, etc.
The PM highlighted, “My government is committed to ensuring welfare schemes reach every citizen. Every scheme must reach its intended beneficiaries. Every beneficiary must be treated equally. No one should face discrimination based on caste, creed, faith, wealth, or ideology. We must strive to ensure everyone's well-being and prosperity. This way, even those not directly benefiting never feel left out or treated unfairly. They find comfort in knowing they, too, will benefit in due course. This fosters a deep sense of trust, and trust is the cornerstone of my governance model".
Democracy isn’t a phenomenon or concept but a two-way relationship between the government and the citizens wherein efforts are needed from both entities. Indian government and Indians both are working towards making the nation equal and fair for all and in the end, that’s what matters!
