On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet of India approved and launched a new agriculture-related scheme called the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY). The scheme aims to establish a minimum of 100 agricultural districts, specifically those districts that are underdeveloped and far from the grasp of the modern world.
The scheme was initially announced by the Finance Minister of India during the announcement of the Union Budget of 2025. She also announced the 5 major objectives of the scheme:
Enhancing agricultural productivity.
Adopting crop diversification and sustainable agricultural practices.
Augmenting post-harvest storage at the Panchayat and Block level.
Improving irrigation facilities.
And, facilitating the availability of long and short-term credit options.
The Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana has been created on the foundations of the Aspirational District Program (ADP), which came in the year 2018, for the development of the 112 underdeveloped regions across India.
Some major points concerning the working of the Sarkari Yojana are laid down below for one’s reference and better understanding:
A budget worth around Rs. 24,000 crore p.a. has been allocated toward the implementation of PMDDKY.
As it has been created by taking the foundation of ADP, NITI Aayog will be responsible for providing support in the form of guidance to the newly launched agri scheme.
A digital portal will be designed for the smooth operation and working of the newly launched agri scheme.

All the to-be-selected 100 agricultural districts across India will be evaluated on 3 parameters. The parameters of selection are as follows:
Low productivity
Moderate crop intensity
Below-average credit
Districts that fulfil all three parameters will be a part of the 100 agricultural districts under PMDDKY.
The Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana aims to not only improve and promote the agricultural sector, but also has a special focus on developing the underdeveloped districts across India by turning them into agricultural districts. PMDDKY will transform the existing conditions of the selected districts and the people residing there by various means such as employment generation, infrastructure development, and others to eventually make the people Aatmanirbhar.
