There are 3 major ways of transportation roadways, airways, and waterways. Any nation must use all three ways of transportation optimally to successfully climb up the stairs of growth and development of all sectors. However, in India, when compared to other modes of transportation and other countries like the U.S.A. and China, the waterways aren’t as popular and used.
To rectify this and increase the movement of goods through waterways, the government of India launched the Jalvahak scheme. The Government Yojana aims to optimally use transportation through waterways.
The government of India recently introduced a new govt scheme called the Jalvahak scheme specifically for waterways. This scheme’s primary aim is to increase the movement of cargo through waterways. This would not only boost the use of waterways but also make the lives of cargo owners easier by giving them one more option to transport the goods in a more convenient and effective manner.
There are some key details about the Jalvahak scheme that one should know about. All the major details are mentioned below.
The govt scheme has a focus on promoting waterways transportation through National Waterways 1 (Ganga), National Waterways 2 (Brahmaputra), and National Waterways 16 (Barak River).
As the Jalvahak scheme also aims to make the lives of cargo owners easier, it has a provision under which those cargo owners who would be transporting their goods more than 300 km will be eligible to receive a 35% refund on operating costs.
The Jalvahak scheme would work for the next 3 years and help waterways come into the limelight as other modes of transportation like roadways and airways.

The government yojana will be implemented by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the Inland & Coastal Shipping Ltd. (ICSL), a subsidiary of the Shipping Corporation of India.
The Jalvahak scheme expects to achieve at least 200 million by the year 2030 and 500 million tonnes by the year 2047.
The government of India has allocated funds of around 95 crore by 2027 to achieve all the pre-determined goals of the Sarkari Yojana.
