The textile manufacturing sector in India maintains an important position worldwide by combining ancient natural fibre production of cotton and silk alongside synthetic fibre development. Textile and apparel export figures expanded by 7% throughout April-December 2024 over the corresponding period of 2024 according to recent trade records. The upward trend is reflected positively by government measures promoting enhanced competitiveness of the textile sector at both national and international levels.
The Indian government has implemented various schemes and policies to strengthen the textile industry, ensuring sustainable growth and global competitiveness. These initiatives focus on modernisation, financial support, and skill development to enhance exports and employment opportunities.
Businesses launching under the PM MITRA Parks Scheme set out to build internationally recognised textile facilities which draw financial investments from across the world and establish new job opportunities. These parks will make the Indian textile value chain more competitive through their modern facilities and advanced infrastructure.
The PLI Scheme operates through man-made fibre (MMF) fabrics, apparel and technical textiles by providing financial rewards to support large-scale manufacturing. The initiative works toward increasing home-based textile manufacturing while lowering import reliance which improves India's international market position in the textile sector.
The mission expresses dedication to speciality fibre research and application-based textile development through geotextiles, medical textiles, and sports textiles over the period from 2020 to 2026. This government initiative supports the use of biodegradable clothing textiles that are made from unusual natural fibres like bamboo and milkweed which follow present global sustainability standards.

The demand-based programme SAMARTH functions as a skill development initiative with job placement services to supply skilled employees for the textile sector. The government programme exists to develop worker capabilities because it prepares employees for both present-day textile sector requirements and future expansion.
Under ATUFS the programme gives financial support through capital investment subsidies which cover benchmarked textile machinery products. This programme works to enhance production output together with product quality while strengthening textile sector performance.
India's export potential receives support from Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) that cover 14 agreements including links with the UAE as well as Australia and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). Indian textiles and apparel benefit from these agreements which expand their market opportunities to promote sector development. The rebate system including RoSCTL and RoDTEP serves the industry by increasing competitiveness and maintaining zero-rated exports.

The Indian textile business operates by adopting sustainability practices that match global sustainability objectives. The Future Forward Factory project caters to building near-net-zero textile manufacturing sites that can establish India as a global leader in sustainable textile operations. Through joint efforts with Startup India and DPIIT under the Ministry of Textiles the industry receives funding for the development of sustainable textile solutions such as textile waste recycling programmes and bio-fibre production.
The Indian textile and apparel exports achieved a 7% increase due to sustained government efforts that modernised facilities and improved production capacity while expanding international markets. India stands strong to advance its position as a global textile leader because the industry maintains its dedication to innovation while adopting sustainable practices.
