  • Insurance Cover: The account holders of PMJDY are also entitled to ₹2 lakhs accidental insurance and ₹30,000 life insurance if he or she transacts the account at least once in 45 days.

The eligibility criteria to be fulfilled for opening a Jan Dhan Yojana account is simple. It is given below:

  • An applicant must be a citizen of India.

  • The age of the applicant must be over 10 years.

  • The applicant must not have had a bank account before.

How is Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) Implemented?

The Jan Dhan Yojana scheme was rolled out in three phases:

Phase 1 (15 August 2014 - 14 August 2015):

  • According to its target, it’s aimed at bringing banking facilities to every household in India.

  • Every family would have at least one bank account, and a RuPay Debit Card and would get ₹1 lakh accident insurance.

  • The financially literate programs were started in villages and KCC were provided.

Phase 2 (15 August 2015 - 14 August 2018):

  • In this phase, micro insurance and pension schemes such as Swavalamban were launched for unorganised sector workers and employees.

Phase 3 (14 August 2018 onwards):

  • It is to be mentioned that the overdraft (OD) limit which was ₹5,000 has been raised to ₹10,000 and there are no strings affixed to overdraft up to ₹2,000.

  • This means that the age limit for overdrafts which was given as 18-60 years was increased to 18-65 years.

  • Those who have opened the account after 28-08-2018 are entitled RuPay cardholders get ₹1,00,000/- Accident Insurance instead of ₹1,00,000.
